Hello everyone, I am Jennifer and my new tripawd pup is leroy. He lost his front right leg due to a highly aggressive spindle cell tumor. His amputation took place on november 17th nearly a month out at this point. He has been pretty good about walking around and wanting to go for walks, eating normally and sometimes even wants to grab his toys. He has finished all his meds at this point but I am concerned because he still will very randomly yelp, also if I touch his head and or neck he cries and it's not even that close to his incision site. I'm scared something is wrong and when I came home today he doesn't want to get up out of bed. He's been doing so good but I don't know if something else is wrong, his stitches are out. Please help :/
Hi Jennifer and Leroy! Sorry you find yourself here, but there is no better place to be for support, information and understanding.
Take some deep breaths....B R E A T H E......B R E A T H E...and let's see how we can get Leroy feeling better, okay!
How old is Leroy?
What has his aactivity level been like these past several weeks? A front legger can over donit sooooo easily the first mo th or two and beyond!
Did all this start after he finished his meds?
How long has he been off meds and what were they?
Soooo often with a front legger shoulder muscles can be strained, as well as neck muscles, and sometimes it's a disc issue or pinched nerve...all treatable!!
You need to have your Vet check Leroy over and get him back in the road to recovery. Complete rest and some anti-inflammatory meds generally do the trick. Leroy may also have some phantom limb pain and the Vet will prescrbe Gabapentin for that. I'm certainly not a Vet and strongly urge you to get Leroy checked out so he can get these issues treated. A pinched neck nerve makes a dog not want to move because it's a shooting pain with a move the wrong way.
Please keep us posted!!! We are here for you! Others will chime in with their suggestions.
Hugs!!!!

HI! Thanks for the quick response, he got up and wanted to eat but he's still yelping when I touch his neck. He has also been yelling whenever I go to connect his leash to his collar, I'm wondering if that's just anxiety. He was on gabapentin, Rimadyl, tramadol, and an antibiotic. He has finished everything but some tramadol which I am giving him incase he's still in pain. I think he finished all his meds about a week ago. He did seem to be maybe a little less yelpy when he was on the gabapentin but since the surgery he has seemed to be sensitive around his neck and shoulder area. I thought maybe it was because of his stitches but those have been out about a week now. He's 8 1/2 maybe close to 9 (he was a rescue). He's been doing so good walking but it breaks my heart whenever he yelps, I've been trying to go easy on him and we do very short walks, but I know it's good for him to get up and hop around if he wants to.
Hi Jennifer and Leroy, thanks for joining. If it's any reassurance this is relatively common and the good news is that there are things you can do to alleviate the pain. Tell us more about his activity. What are short walks to you and Leroy? Is he doing any core strengthening activities? And yes indeed, activity is good but too much too soon can be detrimental. It sounds like he pulled a neck muscle, which is very common in front leggers new to life on three legs.
At this point i would let your vet know what's going on tomorrow, and really consider asking for a referral to a veterinary rehab therapist. These folks understand body mechanics of a Tripawd better than anyone, and the Tripawds Foundation will even pay for your first consult. See:

Got any pictures? He's a lucky dog to have such a conscientious mama!

Thank you! That helps! His walks are typically about half way down our street block and back. We live in NY so it's hard for him to find spots he wants to use. Within the house he moves around pretty good and his balance is getting better everyday, he even has traction on our linoleum floors which is awesome. He gets up and down from the couch and I have my bed on the floor now so he can sleep with me. I guess I didn't know about any core strengthening exercises . The vet where he got his initial surgery done hasn't really been very helpful to me at all with any information. His initial recovery was really rough and I couldn't get him to walk for almost the first week. So I had an at home vet come to see him which is the one that will be seeing him tomorrow. Once I figure out how to get a picture on here I will! Haha
What a spiffy guy with the hat
I didn't know anything about rehab until I found this site - my regular vet didn't seem to know a lot either. Some veterinary offices do have rehab, I found in my research. I ended up going to a facility that does rehab only - hopefully you have something in your area.
It is so difficult to see them in pain and uncomfortable, I know. Everyone here is pulling for you two, hang in there!

OOOOOMMMMMDDDDD!!! That face!!! Those eyes!!!! ADORABLE!!! Although, it doesn't lokk like Leroy is real thrilled about having his picture taken!
Now that you know how to post pictures, we can see more of that Cutie Pa Tootie!!
Let us know what the Vet says tomorrow.

He is a cutie! Love those eyes! Do you have a harness? We used the Ruffwear Webmaster Plus (red looks great on a black dog). I mention it because we clipped Otis' lead to the back of the harness, not to his collar. I felt that this was more stable for him as a front legger. I didn't have to worry about accidentally pulling him off balance.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
Oh I'm in love with Leroy! What a cutie patootie!
I'm glad this info helps. Yeppers, we're all about the core strengthening here. It's something we learned after our Jerry almost blew out his cruciate ligament. We didn't know anything about keeping a Tripawd strong when he lost his leg many years ago. But since then we've made it our mission to talk to as many rehab therapists as possible so that these special pups and kitties can stay pain-free and hoppy. If you haven't already, check out our e-book Loving Life On Three Legs . It's got lots of tips.
Many vets are still not really in tune with the growing specialty of canine rehabilitation therapy. It's a relatively new field in the vet industry (about 10-15 years young) and therapists are just now getting the word out. Just make sure that whoever you choose is certified with a CCRT or CCRP after their name. That's the highest credential available. Being in NYC you should have many options. The link I gave you about rehab therapy has links where you can search for a practitioner.

Thanks for the info every one! The vet came by today and said she thinks that given what he has gone through that it isn't irregular for him to still be in pain. She reccomensed we put him back on gabapentin and rimadyl while he is still healing and that she would recommend a Chinese herb to give him that helps to make him heal faster all together. She also reccomended I start also giving him supplements to keep him healthy and strong and help with his joints etc. She gave me the name of a place in NY that does water therapy for dogs called Green Dog, but she said it is not certified. The other place listed on the directory here I think relocated to Oakland :/ my vet also told me about something called laser therapy? Has anyone ever heard of that? She said it is supposed to help them to hear faster and revitalize the cells and reduce pain. This sounds like a decent thing to do but a lot of the different therapies are very priceybso I want to be sure I choose the correct one.
