Hi, I am new to the site. I have a new foster dog, he is 8 yo golden mix, Bernie. His front leg was amputated in April due to bone infection, but recovered nicely. I just got him today, and took him for a really short walk, he hops very fast, he can easily go up and down for stairs too.
My dog and I usually takes a 2.5 miles a walk in the early morning and a half mile walk in the evening. I don't know if this is too much for him to walk as hopping probably requires much more energy than just walking. Thanks.
Hi Bernie & Family, welcome! Your future posts won't need approval.
Great question! Veterinary rehabilitation therapists have told us they recommend shorter, more frequent walks of no more than 15-20 minutes max, 2 or 3 times a day at most. That's because yes, it does take a lot more energy to throw that weight around, especially for front leg amputees.
If you haven't already be sure to check out the Tripawds Rehab Book, lots of great tips there about life on three legs, staying strong, etc. Our Gear blog also has some fantastic tips like:

What kind of bone infection did he have? Is he available for adoption? If so please share his story in the Tripawds Rescue Forum & we'll help get the word out.
