Hello Everybody!

Today we are 4 weeks out from Mara's front leg amputation.  She is doing awesome!  She had her first round of chemo and recovered nicely from that as well after about 4 days.  We also went on our first off leash "real" walk since surgery last night (and I live in Wisconsin so there is a boat load of snow up here), and she was a crazy woman!  So far we have only went on a few short leash walks, and one time I had to call home to have somebody come get us.  But last night, she's flying around doing her happy run.  When she got tired, she'd just plop down in the snow and then hop back up and at it again.  I purposefully kept the walk short for her, and she did fall once when she fell off the snowmobile tracks we were walking in and into the deep snow going down a hill.  I could tell she was embarrassed, but I just helped her up, brushed her off, and away she went.

Anyway, she has some small sores on her hocks, and I am pretty sure this is from how she leverages herself to get herself up.  My other Irish Wolfhounds that prefer to sleep on the ground instead of the beds or outside on the sidewalk will get these.  I was trying to search online to find some sort of hock-protecting sleeves or something, but I'm not sure what would work.  So I just decided to post on here to see if others have had this problem and what products worked for them. And if this isn't the right place to post about this, please direct me.

Thank You,

Beth & Mara

Beth and Mara this is a perfect place to post.

I think I know what you mean about hock sores, our Wyatt Ray developed a callous on his remaining rear leg. He still has it but he doesn't bang it around as much now that he's stronger. When he was very post-amp, it was a lot worse.

We wrote about elbow hygromas in the gear blog but you're talking about rear-leg pressure sores right? Here are some other ideas for coping with pressure sores.

Angel Elgin's Mom Ann created this hygroma/pressure sore protector. If you want to get in touch with her it's very easy to do so.  You can private message Ann here, her user name is "elginsfamily." She made one for another member, Atlas the Great Dane, a while ago.

I hope this helps! Do let us know what works.

P.S. that romp in the snow sounds like so much fun! Mara is amazing! Congrats on your first off-leash walk and knocking down a chemo session!
