I agree!! LOOOOOOVE HEARING ABOUT UNA AND MO!!!

And the insight into the lives of chickens is fascinating! 'It warms my heart to know that there are sensitive Souls such as yourself who can see each animal having the right to live as nature intended. The have a will to live, a capacity for joy and a capacity to feel.pain and the ability to love.

These two are probably THE luckiest chickens in the world!!

Love

Awwww. That term "normal" is so silly. What is normal after all? And how boring would that be if all creatures were identical?!

I also love getting a firsthand look at someone who cares deeply about animals, especially ones considered 'commodities' in the ag world. Like I had no idea that chicks smelled different than chickens, but that totally makes sense. Like that baby smell that humans have (at least when their diapers aren't full!). So cool.

I knew you would like the diaper holster 🙂 There must be more in house chickens then we know about! lol

Im not surprised to hear Una and Moe are intelligent and working for mealworms;)
I love hearing and learning about them ! All birds are very intelligent!

If you are not using live mealworms, try them I think that will be PURE gold to them;)

We host bluebirds in the spring/summer and supplement feed live mealworms;) They come when I whistle for the their worms.

Extra mealworms for Unapawd and Moe!
Hugs!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

The chicks will be two months old in a few days. Exciting days around here. In the last day or so, Mo has started CROWING. I myself have not witnessed it, but I'm going to get up early tomorrow to spy on him. I doubt I'll get a video, but it would not really be recognizable crowing yet anyway. They always sound like they are being strangled when they start learning how, it is cute but very pathetic.

Una is doing great. Honestly the best lap chicken I have ever had. She is especially attached to me but is an equal opportunity cuddler! And her leg is doing well. Here she is (she jumped onto my mom's shoulder). My mom was complaining to me that it was really hard to get good pics of her because "she keeps jumping into my lap." I just nodded.

She is actually the more mature-looking of the two in terms of body shape, though she has a young face. Her body is close in proportion to adult hens, just smaller.

And here is Mo, just cause:

He is a stringy little beanpole right now. Also very curious about people. He will run across the yard to greet someone new, which most chickens definitely don't do. I think Una would do the same if running wasn't a bit tougher for her. She knows people will come to her anyway!

I introduced them to my dog without a fence between for the first time the other day. He and Mo actually get along great, but Una's hopping gait attracted the wrong kind of attention from him, so I'll keep them separate. Not that she showed much interest in making friends. Chickens tend to scorn my little dog.

Btw, they are still less than half the size of my adult birds, even their mom. So don't think they're growing up that fast!

Wow!   They are both beautiful, and so different from when you began posting.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Happy Valentines Day!

I think Una will always be one of your best lap chickens, cuddlier’s chicken in general 😉

Una’s leg looks a lot more yellow in these pictures.
She is getting a good size to her leg. Very neat to see! She is a cutie!

Moe is really going to be striking in his pure white and red! Beautiful Rooster.

Neat, that they are so comfortable around people and greet them!
I wonder if its because you have raised them that way, all the love and attention. They associate so much good with you they would assume the same from other humans. Either way these two are so special and lucky to have you as the their human.

Cant wait to see what Mo sounds like. Then will Una will be laying eggs in the next couple of months?

Hugs,

It is always such a delight to read your posts and see how Una and Mo are doing 🙂 It's truly a bright spot here!

Mo looks like a lanky, long legged, skinny teenager! I love that even his "voice" will soon be changing from that of a little boy into a young man!:-)

It's great that Mo and your pup can co exist. Yeah, I guess Una's hop is a little too much temptation for your pup to...er... "pursue"!

These pictures are so great! I love seeing Una cuddling with you on your shoulder....sweet!

We'll be waiting for the crowing attempt video!!

Thanks again for bringing us the joy of getting to know Una and Mo, as well as the incredible bond you have.

Hugs!

It's been a while since I did a video, I finally got her to quit cuddling long enough to show her abilities. laughing No crowing from Mo, he's unfortunately camera shy, as most young cockerels are about crowing.

I'm not kidding about the cuddles. She'll sit like this all day.

I don't expect Una to start laying any time soon, although she might surprise me. I think most of our bantam ladies start laying around 5 or 6 months. She is looking more mature a lot faster than her mother did, but still quite small.

P.S. Notice in the video how she aims her tail towards the right? Her tail is pretty much always in that position. For balance, I guess. Do tripawd dogs and cats tend to do that with their tails? Just curious. I don't know if they use their tails for balance as much as chickens do.

Yes! way-cool We we have noticed with a number of different Tripawds (usually rear-leggers) how they will use their tails like a rudder as they run, compensating for balance in the gait. This is pretty noticeable with Wyatt from the rear, he has a pretty big tail.

Jerry had a long bushy tail too, but we never really noticed it with him (missing a front leg)—but that was years ago, and we were admittedly less observant of such things back then.

Soooooo cute!!! I could listen to their happy chatter all day! Such a beautiful sound!

It's so sweet to see how Una likes to cuddle. She clearly feels safe and secure with youheart Does Mo like cuddling at all?

I always look forward to your update AND photos 🙂 So glad you joined our family!

They are too cute!!! Looks like Moe is keeps a close eye on Una too  😍

Snuggling Unapawd! Adorable ! She is your Therapy chicken . I don't imagine all chickens snuggle like that?

Purrkins is a front leg tripawd kitty. He does not use his tail to balance. Una uses her tail, her little foot and her wings .

Animals are so smart they figure out what works. Its always a inspiration to see how they adapt and move on regardless! Love it!

Alright, this actually happened earlier in the week, but I haven't had the time to share. Una got a bath on Wednesday. She had gotten some mites, so we took care of that! She was not particularly happy to be in the water and jumped out of the sink a couple times. She was more relaxed about the blow dryer. We just used dog shampoo. The whole process was maybe 15 minutes.

So that's what we've been up to. This was her after the bath & blow dry, nice and clean!

Oh Una! You are such a good chicken!!! Very few dogs would behave that well when having a bath! And yiur didn't even "shake off" or immediately go roll in something stinky!!

I bet the warmth of the blow dryer was soothing. Una, not many chickens get a SPA DAY!

Thanks for sharing some more fun times with Una! 🙂

WOW! Una you look so fully and booootiful after your spa day!

I have never seen a dog or cat act so mellow and calm while getting a bath. If she was unhappy I sure couldn't tell. Una is a role model for pets everywhere. Pretty darn awesome girl.
