Hi! First Let me introduce my beautiful Tripawd, Leia. She is a husky mix about a year and half old, and we adopted her from our local humane society about 2 months after she had her leg amputated. She was brought into the shelter after she was found with shotgun shrapnel in her left leg, she was left too long with it in her leg, so it couldnt be saved. She is such a wonderful dog, and I love her to bits.

Now, normally she is generally well behaved, she never barks (ever), she is over the top friendly and will lick you to death before biting you. She is still a puppy, so I do sometimes come home to finding that she has chewed some things up but that's ok she makes up for it in cuteness!

My problem however, is that sometimes (not all the time) when we are outside, whether it be on a leash or in our fenced in back yard not on a leash, she sometimes out of nowhere gets uncontrollably hyper. She will rip around the back yard at top speed and when i try to calm her, she lashes out and jumps all over me and even has nipped at me a couple of times. Obviously, this is unacceptable. I fear for her safety, mine, family and strangers. It's like in these moments she becomes a completely different dog, and nothing I do can calm her down, i usually just have to let her go crazy until she tires herself out. I was wondering if it is possible that she has some form of PTSD from being shot. I should also add that we believe she was abused in her previous home, because we cannot put her in a kennel without her freaking out. The Humane Society never mentioned an behavioural issues to us when we adopted her.

Any help would be much appreciated. She is my baby, and I just want the best for her 🙂

Thanks in advance.

P.s I should also add that we live in a small town, so we dont have any animal behaviourists available to us here.

Hi Leia and family, welcome! Thank you for giving this sweet pup such a great home and chance at a fantastic life.

To me, that sounds very typical of Husky puppy behavior. The reason I say this is because she reminds me of Adelaide the Tripawd Husky. Check out her crazy adventures.

She's still pretty young. What type of exercise is she getting? And when she has these outbursts, how exactly are you trying to calm her?

Yes this does sound similar to Aria and Teddy's story! What a coincidence.

And just throwing out one more thing...is it even remotely pssible that she is experiencing pain of some sort and trying to "run away" from it?

It does sound like it could be a burst of "puppy gone wild" behavior though...albeit , off the charts!
Can't wait to see pictures of this cutie...and even video of her "outbursts" would be interesting!

She's clearly found a wonderful forever home!!

Hugs to all!

I agree with it sounding like a display of one of the great husky personality traits 🙂 My Jake was part husky and he'd go absolutely nuts sometimes at full speed all around the back yard (then I learned to get him worked up by clapping my hands really fast and it would get him going in the house...it was just too funny not too). He even ran smack into me once. I think they just get a burst of energy and I would just let Jake have his moment. There was no way to calm that energy other than just letting him run it out. Husky's are VERY intelligent dogs. They can do really well with obedience training (Jake learned commands via sign language) so that might be an option. The nipping though is probably something you should re-direct, but it sounds to me like maybe shes using her mouth at playtime b/c no one's probably really taught her it's not polite to play like that with a human (dogs are very mouthy with each other when they play).

Husky's are so funny. Would love to see a video of this!!!

Meesha does that whole "running around like her arse is on fire" thing as well. In fact, I'm sure she left a face impression on a tree out front. Melody doesn't do this, but then Mel is a border collie mix where Meesha is a Lab mix. With that said, our Harmony did the same thing (Lab). I learned it's just best to let them get all that energy out of their system. ESPECIALLY before letting them into the house! (I've been knocked off my feet a couple of times!)

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Okay, so Merry Myrtle does NOT have PTSD around dog beds at Petco anymore...

She does, however, have PTSD if I get anywhere near her with a tube of Advantix...an empty tube

Thank you all for your great reponses and videos! I'm thinking that i will just let her run out her energy and try to redirect the nipping and jumping at me. I will definitely have to video her one day and show you all her craziness!
