Ouch! Tipper has been fighting a bare pad injury on and off for quite some time. He's always had seasonal allergy/yeast infections. In fact, it was steroids for the licking and limping that masked his tumor on his front leg in the first place.
The licking and flare ups seem to coincide with low white blood cell counts lately.
Anyway, vet gave us some wash/soak stuff. We have a spray too, but our favorite vet said that the spray might draw more attention to the area.
I hate to cone of shame him, but I haven't been able to get a sock to stay on him.
Any thoughts about boots? Right now, he's actually managing mostly on two legs, if you can believe that, when he goes outside. But he still has to put his wounded paw in the dirt a little bit.
Might a boot serve a couple of purposes - keep him clean, provide extra anti-slip, and keep him from licking? I'm worried that even pressure from the sock might be painful.
Has anyone tried plastic baggies just to keep foot clean outside?
With chemo, we can't do a steroid to speed things along. Vet says clean and dry is the only remedy, and he doesn't seem too worried. I just don't want him to add an injury while he's trying to hop on only two legs! 🙁
I would recommend you try Pawz Booties , they are basically balloons for dog feet. You can see them Here in the gear blog.
They are pretty cheap, come in lots of sizes, and are disposable but reusable. Another member also gave us the great idea that if you need to soak a foot get Pawz in a couple sizes too big, wrap the foot in cotton or something else soaked in the solution and put the big bootie on it.
I used Pawz on my quad pug Tani when she got to the point that she couldn't walk on slippery floors. The only thing I didn't like about them is her feet got damp if I left the booties on too long, but I only really needed them when I took her to the vet.
Good luck.

I second the Pawz boots! I bought them for Murphy for when we go to the vet and they are great for traction . You wouldn't want to leave them on for long-term, like all day, since they are a little snug at the top, but they would be perfect for going out in the dirt and protecting the foot.
