At a week away from turning 12, my Chan Man has been slipping a bit on my wood floors. Not a lot, just see his paws shuffling a bit. I can also hear them swishing when he walks on the tile in my sunroom. So, last week, I did his paw trimming, big time. He had just had his nails trimmed at the vet. I was determined to get all the extra sloppy stuff off. I got a bit overzealous because he started to limp a bit on his back leg. I even noticed him having some trouble squatting to poop. After checking him thoroughly, this being after I panicked, I discovered a red, raw place right behind his paw pad. The best I can figure, I nipped it with the clippers( which, by the way were my hubby's beard trimmers.) I decided there had to be a better way. After some research, I discovered Dr. Buzbys toe grips. They really do help. No nail clicking and a lot less sliding. I was so proud of myself, I gave him a Kong, got on the floor and put all 16 grips on his toenails. No small feat as he hates his paws handled. He walked all around the house and I figured I had done something really helpful for him. Then...I let him outside. He settled himself on the front porch and within 5 minutes had removed 3 of them. No, they did not fall off, I had noticed him chewing at them before I let him out. The ones I removed later had to be pried off with my nails. There were 3 little rubber grips laying in a row. I took all the front ones off and thought the back ones would still help. I had to go in town and when I returned he had removed all of the back ones with the exception of his little toes. There was another very neat pile waiting there for me. Uggggg! I think this is probably a very helpful, useful product, but unfortunately Chan is not a fan. I guess I will just get some more area rugs. Unfortunately, when it rains, Lucy still will pee on them, so I have to replace them a lot. I figure that if he took the time to remove them, there must be a reason. I will follow his lead on this one. He is a very smart boy and the source of many chuckles. If anyone has another idea, I am open. I tried the show sticky spray. Not very helpful. I know boots will not fly. Probably not socks either. I still remember poor Ty when I bought him socks. He just stood there like I had taken his other 3 feet away. So, I figure They are not a solution either. I just found this whole thing a bit amusing and thought I would share the laugh. All that hard work LOL. I have no idea how to help you out. 🙂

I can just picture him sitting there, very carefully removing those pesky things and setting them all in a pile. Very big grin!
The sock story reminded me of our first Golden, Sam. He had a sore paw that he kept worrying, so Garry put a sock on it. He just limped around with the paw in the air. When we put a second sock on, he was totally immobilized.
Sorry, but not much help here...just smiles.
Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork
Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!
UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!
LMAO! Having had the privilege of meeting sweet, mild mannered, laid back Chandler, I can only imagine the intense focus and effort he put into getting these things off! He mist have been sp pleased with his victory!
Ty must be laughing over this too because his banner popped up on this post! Lpri, I smile everytime I see his banner. That third photo...the ine of him gazing into our souls with those gentle eyes of his, I love that one!
That Lucy is quite the character! Not gonna get her little privates wet if it's raining...no siree...she'll jist pee on the rug!
Kathi, I love the visual of Sam holding that paw up! LOL!
Thanks Lori...and Chandler! You real k y did make us laugh. And Lori, good luck on Chandler ever letting you touch his paws again!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I'm with michelle... all I have is a big old LOL! Poor Chandler and poor you if Lucy pee pees on the rugs! I can't even imagine. Oy!
I remember I got Shelby booties years and years ago for a costume... she hated them! She would stand w/one paw up and walk all awkward. So when the PT told me to put a scrunchie on her good leg to try and get her to strengthen her bad leg before we removed it, she was an old pro at still avoiding the use of the leg due to an object on it!
Poor buddy...
Hugs!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Oh Lori, I had a really good laugh at your posting! Poor Chandler, he is too smart for his own good. My Polly was quite a bit the same way, but she did like her Mutt Luks that she wore for many years before she became a Tripawd. It took a bit of time while she was young to get her used to them, but she finally settled in and never minded wearing them after that.
I wish there was something I could recommend, but he seems pretty set against anything, and I am much like you, I hate seeing them slip and slide, I would hate for him to hurt himself.
Maybe there is something out there that you haven't found yet, as least hoping so.....

Heads up Lucy!! Looks like mom might have to go with rugs...and you might be wearing diapers!!
Alison...interesting way your vet suggested getting Shelby used to three legs. Great technique!

Thanks for that feedback Lori. We know they can be useful but we keep hearing mixed feedback on them, which is why we haven't carried them in our Gear store. I think the most practical solution for indoors is no-slip runners and throw rugs. That way there's nothing you need to remember to do, and nothing to annoy poor Chan. Sure they don't look good on fancy floors but it's a small price to pay for having a dog with no injuries from sliding around.

Oh, I don't mind throw rugs, it is just Lucy seems to take it upon herself to pee on them all. She is currently gated in the laundry room because she refused to go when I took her outside after church. It is really bad if it is raining. That is my only reason for not having so many.

Oh, that really does sound funny! Thanks for the laugh! I can just picture him there patiently chewing them off, one at a time and lining them up neatly for you
We bought the pawz boots for Murphy to use when we go to the vet and they work great on the tile floor, but you wouldn't be able to leave them on all day because they are sort of like balloons & they are a little bit tight at the top.

PAM!!! OMD!! These pictures are ADORABLE!!! The girls are so very pretty, even when they're a bit "perturbed"!
But the looks on Melody and Harmony's faces.....speaking volumes....they are not smiling! Just more proof about the emotional intelligence of dogs! They sure do not like things that...in a dog's mind...make them look "silly"! Sorry pups...but you look "over the top" cute to us!!
GREAT PICTURES! Nice to see our sweet Harmony again too!
Love to you!

Oh my goodness, how cute! Are they baby socks? The looks on their faces. The balloon things I bought once for Lucy. She does not like to get her feet wet. She yelped like I was twisting her paws off. I know better than to try them on Chan. I wonder how long Chan would take to remove socks? LOL Lori, Ty & the Gang

I don't have any suggestions, but I got a good chuckle seeing Chandler line those toe grips up in a row in my minds eye

They are dog no-skid booties in the shapes of animals. Before we knew why Harmony was licking and chewing, we had to put booties on her paws. We (and the vet) were convinced that she was limping because she was chewing on her paws. It wasn't until later when we found out it was because of the huge mass in her arm pit and that the MCT had spread all over her body.
Any-hoo, we couldn't put booties on Harmony without putting them on Melody as well. Nope, they didn't like 'em at all! But I cherish the pictures.
Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.
