Hi friends, the rumors are true, it is indeed possible to survive CCL surgery on the remaining back leg of a Tripawd. Ajax had surgery Monday to repair his CCL. The ligament and meniscus were completely torn - we are feeling terrible about not recognizing that sooner. But pup is home, already weight bearing with his Help Em Up Harness (GREAT product) and doing well! I think the cone is bothering him more than anything else!

YAY, AJAX, welcome to the bionic dog club. We know things will be a bit tough for a while, but us Bionics know we can show how it's done. What type of repair method did your doctor use?

Kathi and Murphy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

AWWWW thanks everybody!   We're doing great.  Biopsy (unrelated to leg; we took a chin growth off at the same time to take advantage of anesthesia) came back as some kind of benign "oma" that the surgeon said is "boring" and "just like a big blood vessel", so not a thing to worry about there, and His Royal Blackness now has his handsome strong chin back  unblemished.

To keep count, this is surgery #4:

1.  Removal of thymoma (benign tumor near lung tissue discovered when doing xrays relating to chondrosarcom)

2.  Amputation (curative of chondrosarcoma)

3.  Removal of mast cell tumor

4.  CCL repair

It is literally like "Cheers" when he goes in  ...( ".....NORM!")

Thanks to everyone for your wishes.  Kathi, he had a TPLO.  We were much to far gone for one option.  Our surgeon thought that either TPLO or TTA would be fine; after consultation with the other surgeon in her group they decided on TPLO.  Surgeon is a rock star, as you can see from the litany above.

I do have one question:  the Help Em Up Harness is GREAT, but it has already rubbed him raw in the back on the side that was shaved for surgery.  Not quite sure what we do to protect this - can't really clothe this area ... Any tips or advice welcome!

Hmmm... reminds us of this other customer review a few years back.

We have a Ruffwear harness for Murphy, and it has worked very well for us. Murphy wore it full time for the first month after his THR, and we still use it when we will be taking him somewhere with slick floors. The handle on top is aso great fr keeping him restrained in situations where we don't want to tug on his collar.

Hmmm. You might want to try adhering a maxi pad on that spot. Not the most chic thing to wear on the outside but I've heard of others using this kind of implement for this purpose.

Oh no! A cone of courage AND a maxipad? Is a good idea tho, thanks. As is the RUFFWEAR Harness - we have one and use it as Kathi and Murph do, but we need more support right now until he can bear weight; specifically we need the back handle
