Hi there!

ShuShu and I now seeing a holistic vet/chiro/acupuncturist (along with her PT) for various issues but specifically lumbosacral amd hip pain. She has had reactions to oral meds for joint health so the vet suggested bypassing gut by utilizing Adequan injections. Any thoughts? She stated they are often for helpful for hip pain which seems to be where Shu's biggest trouble spots are as of late, despite all we do.

Jim, not sure if this is right arena to post this or not (once again :-/). Also curious if it is ok with CBD (but perhaps that is a question for Dr. Pam in the vet section.

Yay for the new vet and therapy! ShuShu is very fortunate to have such a great team working to keep her strong.

Many members have had great success with Adequan. Here's just one of many Adequan forum discussions with feedback from members and Dr. Pam too. She also discusses CBD.

https://tripawd.....r-mobility

Our Wyatt Ray is in the same boat, and at the point of needing Adequan as well. We haven't started yet because we just started him on Actistatin Joint Support for Dogs. We want to see if that makes a difference first. But we've just learned will help prolong the positive effects of Adequan so he will likely be taking both by the end of the year.

It is our understanding that Adequan and CBD can work synergistically. Wyatt's orthopedic vet at CSU discussed the combination with us and mentioned she would be OK with using both. Her only caveat is that she requires him to get labwork if he goes on the CBD, because of the risk of elevated liver enzymes.

So so so helpful. Thank you so much!!! And I love the liver enzyme tip. Ironically at internist getting her brothers checked right now. I’ll read your links above. Thanks again 🙂 And hugs to Wyatt. Xoxo

One more qu...Would they require baseline liver panel before starting and/or at what intervals? Or did you not get there yet since u are trying the Actistatin? 🙂

Oh wow is everything OK with the brothers?

I think a baseline liver panel would really depend on what your vet wants but it would make sense that they would need something to measure future labwork against.

We have not gone there yet but Wyatt's ortho vet said since his most recent labs were in June, she wouldn't require another for 6 months after starting the CBD.

I had great results with adequan in my quad-Pug Tani.  She had terrible arthritis, she was first diagnosed with it when she was 6.  Lots of supplements and gradually increasing meds got her to about 12 years old.  We were maxed out on meds and she was really starting to struggle, to the point that I was thinking I would have to make a quality of life decision for her.  My vet suggested adequan and it was magic for her!

I learned how to do the injections and did them myself at home.

Down side is that it is expensive- or was when we were using it.  Tani was so little (15 pounds) so that it was affordable for us. It also doesn't work for all dogs- but you have to give it a chance to work.

I talked about Tani's experience in one of the threads that Jerry gave you in the links above.

Thanks you two!!

***shu sibling side note: Yes Elliott is ok. He had a bad IBD Episode in the summer (which I posted about and you helped me with) and he has had to be on prednisone during recovery. It was raising liver enzymes. You know the drill. He’s doing great now...Just monitoring the enzymes every four weeks as we reduce prednisone slowly to find the lowest therapeutic dose.

Karen, in reviewing those posts I have a note on my notepad in huge letters “Talk to Karen!!” Lol. Thank you!!!! I read the post and was going to touch base with you. You had an encouraging experience. It’s sad to me that Cashew is only 3 and having the need for this already but I think it is in part because she can not tolerate the fish and joint supplements and has a mom who is scared of NSAIDs after some good experiences but one major loss. Her case is also complicated by the discovered fractured untreated rear right on the two leg side. Her gait is extra cattywampus on top of tripawd cattywampus. Lol. She is mostly getting PT, massage, Assisi loop, chiropractic, ice, CBD and an occasional tramadol if it’s too bad. We have discussed trying Galliprant or Onsior as she ages.

I can definitely do the injections myself too (two cats both on IV fluids at home for some time #wannabeveterinarian). They said I could just do subq at nape but did you do intramuscular? And I will for sure give it a long chance and try.

The cost is nothing close to what Elliott’s care has been so it seems like free in comparison. Not free. But you get the idea (one of his meds is $400, pharmacist got it down to $200 and I found a coupon to get to $142/month. One of his 9 meds (one of the others is $70/month #cryemoji. Omg. Anyways I am derailing.

She gets two doses out of one vial for her weight. So after the front load of twice a week for four weeks (8 doses) she will have four left (Chewy $129 for 12 doses) and then if she can go once a month it’s about $10/ month ($79.99 for 6 doses). If she needs it more frequently it will be a bit more.

so grateful for your knowledge and help....I started working on her blog so you guys can actually see her!!!!

I did sub-q fluids with Tri-Pug Maggie for a few months too- that's what gave me the confidence to do the injections with Tani.

We did the adequan intramuscular, in her flank I think.  It's been a few years, I don't really remember the process but it was pretty simple.  After loading we went to once a month, I think her last 8 months or a year we were every two weeks.

Have you tried gabapentin? I used that for pain with Tani as opposed to tramadol, worked well for her.  But I think it works best given consistently which Cashew might not need right now.

How is chiropractic working?  I was very skeptical that it would help Tani's arthritis but it really was beneficial.  It's something I want to eventually try with Elly but she is so afraid of strangers, she just shuts down when she is touched.  I'm hoping someday though...

I forgot Cashew was so young!  I hope the adequan works for her.

Yeah I think I would like them to train me to do it intramuscular as I’m wondering if I just did it where fluids would go it can’t be as effective. Like why not do the right hip where all the pain is? We shall see. They told me to come get the syringes and consult when I receive the medication.

Henry, my sweet boy before Cashew, was on Gabapentin. It was amazing at first. Towards the end he had a hard time on it. I personally started taking it last January for an injury and it didn’t affect me well and I have been weaning myself off for months due to terrible side effects... That has sort of made me question it. It was my initial consideration for Cashew and know how imperative it is post amputation ...for sure. But because of my own experience with it I decided to hold off.

Chiropractic for Henry was life giving every month. His ability to be mobile was dependent upon it. It was incredible the difference leading up to treatment and post treatment every month. This is why I figured it would help Shu. And I think it has. She has only been twice but I have noticed a difference. Her lumbosacral bilateral and cervical vertebrae on the side where she is missing the limb are the trouble spots.

Henry hated it and I had to feed him diced carrots lol 😂 the whole time. So there may be hope for Elly. Some way to make it safe. His discomfort and hatred of it was a small price to pay for the relief it gave him. And he got better at tolerating it. Shut down is better than biting (which does happen:-/) and growling (which Henry did :-/) Anyhow some of my two cents on it.

Most people give Adequan SQ with good results but for my own dog Julian I do give it IM because he tolerates it well and there is a chance it is better absorbed.
