Hi all,
My sweet boy (9 1/2 year old husky mix) had his front right leg amputated due to osteosarcoma in early August. Since the initial 2 weeks of recovery, he has been doing great and back to how he was years ago.
Friday night everything was fine, and then Saturday morning, his rear legs are giving out on him. He is moving extremely slow and I’m worried about him. His legs haven’t buckled since Saturday morning, but you can tell they’re bothering him with how he’s walking (very hesitant and slow). Most of our house is wood flooring, and I’m worried he went off one of the several rug paths and slipped. We’ve also had to constantly tell him to slow down or to take it easy when playing with his dog “sister”. So he also could have potentially overdone it with that.
If he’s still having troubles come Monday, we’re taking him to the vet to rule out anything serious. But any suggestions, tips, advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Rachel and your pupper....what's his name?
Your post has been approved so we will try and share our experiences and observations to support you as best we can
It does sound like your pup has tweaked a muscle or joint or maybe even his back. It soooo easy for a new tripawd (and he's still relatively new to being a tripawd) to overdo it so early on. Yes, even a slip on the hardwoods can cause this kind of havoc too.
We’ve also had to constantly tell him to slow down or to take it easy when playing with his dog “sister”. So he also could have potentially overdone it with that
So what has his activity been like, in addition to some fun "romps" with his sister?
Couple of things you can try til you get in touch with the Vet Monday..
Massage up and down his spine neck and shoulder and see if he shows any signs of tenseness or tension in any areas as you do that. How 'bout if you pinch his toes does he pull away?. Do you have any anti inflammatory meds and/or pain meds from after his surgery? Of course, we are not Vets and not telling you to give him meds without checking with your Vet.
For now keep his activity down to just SHORT LEASHED potty breaks. Try and make him rest.
Keep us updated, okay?
Hugs

PS. Getting him an appointment with a Certified Rehabilitation Specialist will do wonders to help him stay strong and fit. The Tripawds Foundation will pay for the first visit.
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
