Took Destiny to her first vet visit here yesterday as she has been having some bowel problems. While we are still working on those, she said her fur and skin are really dry and she recommend once I get her bowel problems under control that I add some Omega 3 into her diet.
I was wondering what is your favourite Omega 3 to use and how do you add it into your dog's diet.
Thanks!
Your vet sounds great, I like it when a vet sees the value in supplements.
When it comes to Omega 3s, we usually get it a variety of ways besides a straight oil, like in Honest Kitchen Beams & Wishes treats. Here's an article we published about Omega 3s that might help give you some ideas:

I use Animal Essentials Ocean Omega Supreme liquid fish oil. I give it to both my dogs, one has OSA the other does not but she (the one without cancer) had flaky dry skin (chocolate lab). I give her 1t per day (4500mg) and her coat is so silky and shiny. It stinks to high heaven but it's working.
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
@Jerry, Thank you so much for the link. Yes, I really like our vet office. Our regular vet just hired this new woman vet to work along side him I am assuming to take over the business (he is getting close to retirement) and they are always great. They don't sell dog food at their office and always encourage people to limit the grain in their dog's diets.
@amya, I don't mind stinky as long as it works! Destiny currently has to be brushed every day because of her shedding. Her coat is so itchy and dry so I am hoping it will help. I also bath her once a week with an anti-itch shampoo just to give her some relief even though she doesn't like baths.
Hi you cute Destiny:-) )
I've been using K9 Omega fish oil capsules and I mix some sardines in with her chicken sometimes too.
Big dogs have to take an inordinate amount of pills, supplements etc to get the recommended dosage:-)
Hail to the little guys:-)
I think they do it that way o. Purpose to sell massive amounts of product.
Keep us posted and pat yourself on the back for doing a great job!! No........really.....do it right ow:-) 'Atta' girl:-)
Sally and Happy Hannah
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Bertram gets Welactin Soft Gels by Nutramax. I really like this company because their products are well known, well researched, and trusted in the veterinary community. Supplements are nutraceuticals and they are not regulated by the FDA like prescription medications are, so basically a company can put out an Omega 3 supplement that contains no Omega 3 and no one would know unless an independent study was done. There has been issues with situations like this in both human and animal nutraceuticals. So just be careful with what you get and where you get it from.
Nordic Naturals Omega 3. Jackson is ~60lbs. He gets ~1tbsp at night, which is >4500mg/day. He gets the "double" dose as recommended by NN, but the appropriate dose as recommended by Dr D. B/c we use so much, I get the BIG bottle! I pour it into a cheapy, plastic squeeze bottle and that way it stays nice and clean. I just squeeze it into a tablespoon measurer and dump onto his food. It's one less pill. Plus, Jackson loves it! http://www.nord.....3_16oz.php

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
Here's an article about spotting quality supplements versus rip-offs:

I use the Nature Made fish oil that has 1000 mg of omega 3 per capsule since Julian gets 4000 mg per day (not the cancer dose but just the dose for skin).
I have used the 3V snip tips because the double strength ones are also about 1000 mg per capsule.
Remember when buying fish oil to look at the omega 3 levels and not the total fish oil amount since only the omega 3 levels are important in fighting cancer. The standard dose of 180 mg per 10 pounds is just a starting point for skin or joint disease but oncologists often recommend doses 2 to 4 times higher than that for cancer patients.

So I picked up a local omega three supplement, http://www.spri.....s/fish-oil. It was recommend by the local farm store employee so we though we would give it a shot.
They specialize in raw feeding but they also have other supplements and products.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
