i started giving my dog Pet-Tabs brand vitamins 2 days ago and he was just given Sentinel heartworm pill today. he just had a leg amputation left humerus osa. he will start chemotherapy in 2 weeks. i cannot find any info on this. any info would be greatly appreciated.

We continued to give heart worm pills when Sassy had her cancer. We did that because its an easier thing to give a pill vs have to treat for heart worm and that would have hurt her worse. Gave that during our chemo treatments as well. Check with your vet or Oncologist.

Hi Mick, welcome. Sorry I missed your post yesterday!
Just about anything you can do to feed healthier and supplement your dog's diet in order help your dog fight cancer is beneficial. The information can be overwhelming so it's best to start with something simple. I can't say for sure if PetTabs are a quality vitamin since I don't know much about them, but I would focus on something that would help your dog build up his immune system. Our Tripawds Nutrition blog is a good place to start your research.
As for administering drugs like heartworm medication, I agree with Michelle, in that if your dog got infected, the results are devastating so it's good to be proactive about preventing it. However you also want to be sure it's absolutely necessary in your area. If you live in a high-transmission region like the southern US, then I would definitely want to do it. But if you're in an area with low transmission rates then it's something to weigh the pros and cons about. When a dog has cancer their immune system is compromised so you want to use as few chemicals as possible in his environment.
I hope this helps. Do tell us more about your dog, we're here to help.

thank you jerry and michelle for the information. mickey is miniature schnauzer. he just turned 9. i was in shock to find out he has OSA. as i understand it only about 10% of small dogs get OSA. mickey comes from champion bloodlines. i purchased mickey when he was 10 weeks old. i could not have asked for a better dog. he has been the love of my life. before getting cancer he had no other health problems expect for bladderstones which he had surgery and hydropropulsion for. he recently had a stomach ultrasound and chest xrays and nothing abnormal was found. he is not overweight but the oncologist told me she didn't want him to gain anymore weight. i have cut back a little on his royal canin urinary so dog food (moderate calorie). mickey had cancer about 2 months before he was diagnosed. he was limping and i was taking his sweater off as i raised his front leg he cried out in pain. i took him to the emergency vet the next day. the xray they took showed an osteolytic lesion in his left humerus. and there was a moth eaten appearance on some of his bone. the bone had become soft so they could not biopsy it. mickey has had pet insurance since 2010. it is called Trupanion. they have paid 90% on everything cancer related after i met my deductible of $250.00 the only other thing they don't cover is the consultation/office visit charge. without insurance i likely would have had to put him down.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, I know it's extra surprising considering his size and breed.
Mickey is such a lucky dawg to have you as a pawrent, you'll both be fine during this journey. Glad that the insurance is being good to you.
