Sparky has decided that this week he does not want to eat my 'oh-so-delicious' home cooking.  He went a day without eating and was starting off on day two.   Its been about 11 days since the amputation. I was scared that he was in pain or having some medical issue that was making him not want to eat.  So in an attempt to get him to eat something grain free , sugar free, very low carb I tried giving him a can of the cats' Wellness brand of wet food, mixed with cottage cheese.  It was a hit (but not with the cats...).  He gobbled up three small cans, and would have eaten more - but I am going to make him wait a bit. I am relieved that it was just an issue of being grossed out by my cooking, rather than a loss of appetite.

So now I better run out and find some similar canned food for dogs.  I think Wellness makes a dog food as well as cat food.  He used to eat Orijin dry before I started cooking for him,  but the relatively high potato content scared me off.  Whatever we end uo with must be low low low carb - no grain, corn etc... If anyone has found a great cancer friendly and yummy canned dog food, I would love to hear from you.  Thanks

we might suggest you look into Honest Kitchen dehydrated food.  we feed gayle 'thrive' to give her all the pills and to suppliment her kibble.  we mail order it, maybe it's available in canada as well.  they have several varieties which might appeal to sparky..  good luck!

EVO used to have canned dog food with 95% of meat  (duck, rabbit, chicken, venison ...); very lo carbs if not none.

Look for those with "95% of xxx" big prints on the labels.  I vaguely remember that there were some other EVO canned foods which were not having such high meat contents.

As soon as the can was open, the intense aroma certainly could raise some eyebrows.

cheers.

Sparky, are you kidding? You're turning your nose up at home cooking? WOW! Usually pawrents have the opposite problem.

Check out our Best Grain Free Foods list in our Nutrition blog, and also see our Honest Kitchen posts (I apologize, HK isn't sending free samples to Canada). There's gotta be something you'd like in those lists!

Thanks.  The Dog Food Advisor link was extremely helpful.  The amount of information there is amazing,  but well presented and easy to understand. I got a few cans of Wellness 95 and a few cans of Before Grains.  The chicken BG is a hit.  So now the most spoiled beagle-boy in the world has a full tummy,  and is snoozing away in tramadol slumberland.  He had six 15 minute walks today and seemed full of energy, which was nice to see because the last couple of days he seemed a bit tired and lethargic.   Between the food, the walks and the pill, he needs a bit of sleep now.

Sparky seems to have his normal appetite back which is good.  But on our latest walk today, he was eating a lot of grass, and he hasn't pooped all daywhatever    I explained to him the concept of all meat and no fibre.

Tonight I gave him his homemade cooked veggie blend mixed with some of the tinned high protein food, and fresh parsley with some cottage cheese and then I tossed some flax seed in it for a little extra fibre.  He gobbled it right up.

Is there any reason not to give flax seed to dogs? I see people speaking about flax oil, but not the seeds.

I have a feeling we will be out having a little walk in about 5 hours......

Riley loves the EVO but I don't know if its available in Canada.....But its worth a try if you can find it...

Didn't I see that you had gotten the K-9 Immunity for Sparkey? If so, the same place has the K-9 Omega -

I would recommend giving it a try....
