Pam,
I do still have the food...the whole bag minus the one meal that Seven ate. When I didn't get a decent response from the company, I decided to file a report with the FDA. Their instructions are to hold onto the bag for awhile in case they want to take a sample, but it's been two weeks so my guess is I probably wont hear from them. Why do you ask if I have the food? Do you think it should be tested? I asked both Seven's regular vet and his internal specialist, and neither of them know anything about getting the food tested. What do you suggest? At this point, does it matter if/what the food is contaminated with? To be honest, if the testing is costly, I don't know if I can find the money in my budget unless it will make a signicant difference in treatment.
Seven wasn't tested for anything in particular...just a generic fecal and complete blood panel. He received fluids, a steroid injection, an antibiotic injection and an anti-nausea injection at the vet, and took Pepcid and Metronidazole at home. He had the antibiotic for two weeks and he's still taking the Pepcid for the increased burping/indigestion. Is it too late to start the milk thistle and/or SAM-E? Are they prescription only?
Thank you,
Carol

It is never too late to start liver protectants. You can ask your vet first but I'm sure there is no contraindication. I know that vet schools are able to test food but I have no idea what the cost is. I would call Natura again and ask if they would test a sample and your only charge should be shipping.
You are right the treatment for acute liver failure is often the same regardless of cause but it would be nice to know what triggered it. I still think that the food is very unlikely. Is your dog vaccinated for Lepto? That is a contagious disease that people can get, too although it mainly infects dogs and other wildlife. It is possible that you will never know what happened but luckily it sounds like he is doing well!
