What dog doesn't love peanut butter?? Now the latest is xylitol in peanut butter and other nut butters (actually they call them nut "spreads") from a specific manufacturer, Nuts 'n More. Xylitol is very toxic at very small amounts, and if a larger amount is ingested can be deadly for dogs. Geez! What were they thinkin'? Please check out this link for more info! Xylitol is being used in more and more products so be sure you read those labels, especially when they say sugar free!

Oy.... we're an almond butter household (as in just almonds ground) but thank you for sharing and spreading this! Very scary.... most people won't even think about it!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
I have known about the xylitol thing for awhile, when they started putting it in gum, but now hearing about it being in food is kind of gross.... I am like Alison, and prefer almond butter occasionally, and regular peanut butter always.... I'd much rather just deal with good ole' normal sugar.
Thank you for posting this, I will make sure my friends with dogs know this, and especially the ones that feed them peanut butter.

Wow...I had no idea!!! We use plain old Jif Peanut Butter in our house (can get 2 BIG jars at Costco) so I'll have to check the label when I get home. I give Lucian some in his Kong (along with a smorgasbord of other goodies when I leave) when I have to crate him. I'm with Bonnie just give me plain ole sugar.

May you finally be healthy and running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again my sweet boy!
I found a post about Xylitol on my vet's FB page which also included this bit of information (below) and a link with a list of products known to contain xylitol (http://www.prev.....c-for-dogs).
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center recommends being on the lookout for any ingredient that includes the letters “xyl.” Synonyms for xylitol:
- 1,4-anhydro-d-xylitol
- Anhydroxylitol
- birch bark extract
- birch sugar
- d-xylitol
- xylite
- xylitylglucoside
- Zylatol
Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise
Thank you for sharing!

THANKS MARTHA AND DONNA!!
GABAPENTIN WAS ON THE LIST! GABAPENTIN!!!
I often use JASON'S toothlaste, as well as The Natural Dentist...and To.'s stuff too. You woukd think these "natural" companies would be more conscientious.
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Gosh, I didn't check the medications. But it was the oral solution that is on the list. I haven't heard anyone say they use it as a liquid. But good catch!

Hi Sally, the reason it's in toothpaste is that zylitol (a very natural product) helps to prevents cavities in people. In fact, in some developing countries the schools give the children a zylitol candy every day.
You'll have tell Frankie to use his own dog toothpaste and to leave yours alone

I know I'm late to this topic, but I just wanted to share **shameless plug** which peanut butter Trin adores (well, she adores just about any, but I came across this one at our holistic pet store). I was originally drawn to the "skin & coat" on the label, but then fell in love with the company's mission.
Hugs from Trin!
