Okay, all this ice cream talk got me to looking around on the net for a healthy alternative to Frosty Paws.
My dilemma was that Frosty Paws are so easy to serve. So, I went to Smart and Final (a bulk item restaurant supply store) and found 4oz 'to go' containers with lids. They were cheap for 50 of them. ($2 total). I would assume you can find the containers in Costo or Sam's. Or if anything, you can ask a small restaurant to sell you a few and reuse them.
Here's what we mixed in the blender:
Low Fat Yogurt
4 fresh strawberries
1 table spoon of honey
It made about 8 containers. I let the dogs sample them before they were frozen and they loved them. They are freezing right now.
I need advice whether I should have used low fat, fat free or full fat yogurt. I don't know which is better for a dog.
My next venture will be:
Yogurt
Mashed banana
Peanut butter
Any other suggestions? I estimate each one cost around 37 cents a piece. But I may have overpaid for the yogurt since I bought it at Smart and Final. I don't know what plain yogurt normally costs since I don't buy it.

Oooh, I think you're onto something here! Much, much healthier than Frosty Paws, for sure.
I think yogurt is fine as long as 1) it doesn't have high fructose corn syrup (most do, but Yoplait doesn't), and 2) it's plain, not flavored.
Blueberries are fine. We tried freezing peanut butter once and it wasn't so successfull. Kinda a big mess. If you could figure it out let us know.
Yer a genius! We want some video of Comet & MB eating these up!

Yep, I did the plain yogurt but do you think fat free or low fat is okay for dogs? I never know.
I did want to add that the containers are the styrofoam type for dipping sauces. They are the right size for small mouths. But they have 6oz ones that may work better for a big dog.
I one time mixed water with peanut butter and froze it and it worked. I put it in a used Frosty Paw cup but those are the waxed ones and don't reuse very well. I've also used a ceramic ramekin but had to keep an eye on them so that they didn't break. Peanut butter and water gels okay but it's not very hearty. It was more like a popsicle.

Styrofoam? Do you feed the finished treats in their cups? For pups like Wyatt – more inclined to just swallow things whole – I'd think paper cups would be safer if you can find them.
And I'm no veterinary nutritionist, but I'd be concerned more about chemical ingredients like Aspartame (Nutrasweet) than real sugar. My guess would be, the more natural the better. With the caveat that cancer feeds on sugar.
If we can get a professional opinion, we'd love to post the recipe in the Tripawds Nutrition blog once you refine a recipe that passes Comet's refined taste test! We will need photos, of course. Thanks for starting this great topic!

Wow Cometdog - I'm very impressed with your culinary skills! This recipe sounds pretty good and much cheaper than those Frosty Paws (I paid $4.79 for 4 cups!) Just curious if you put ice in the blender too (some of the protein drinks call for ice which makes it colder and thicker). I'm also wondering if frozen strawberries or blueberries would work too - I get these big bags of frozen blueberries/strawberries, etc. at Costco (no preservatives - very plump berries - the real thing.) My dogs never seem to like any kind of fruit but maybe hidden in a yogurt cup with peanut butter may do the trick. Looking forward to your refined recipe and those photos! Thanks for sharing!
My sweet golden Mackenzie. She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2 although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009. She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes. I love you Mackenzie!
I've been very lucky with the fruit and veggie eating. It's been a domino effect. Rugby would eat anything and really had a taste for fruit and veggies. He'd love it when I got out the cutting board! Comet acquired a taste for the fruits and veggies from him. And now with Comet liking to eat that stuff, Rocket has followed suit.
I'm more inclined to think, it's the excitement behind getting the snack more than the snack itself. Carrots and celery were my diet snack for them. They always got one when we came home after going to eat. So, it was exciting. It's a nightly ritual now. I've elminated the celery because Rocket would just play with it. But he likes apples, strawberries and oranges. He's plays a little with the orange but he eats it.
Okay, they loved their new frosty paw smoothies! After a trip to the park, they enjoyed a refreshing treat.

These are the sweetest pictures!! Cometdog - you look so pretty in pink with your collar and ribbon. Makes me want to give you a big hug and kiss. Even Monkeybutt looks very cute eating his frosty paw (I know Cometdog you wouldn't agree but he really does!) Looks like both of you are enjoying this treat big time! I'll have to try this recipe out on Mackenzie and Kobe. I'm sure they'll love it too

FYI - this recipe is very tasty (not to me really but Comet loved it!)
1/2 large container of low fat Yogurt
2 bananas
1 glob of peanut butter
a few peanuts sprinkled on top
Mix in blender and freeze!

Thank you! I don't want to brag but I do think she is darling and she seems to feel pretty. She gets so excited when I make a new one. I started the ribbon collar when she had that nasty painful neck infection and I felt a collar was uncomfortable. But I needed something to be able to hold if she got mad at Rocket! (he's easy to get mad at!)

Yum - I think Holly would love that! I'll have to try it this weekend. This may sound gross, but I am learning that salmon is one of Holly's favorite foods. I wonder if I mixed canned salmon in with yogurt if she might like that? I'll have her report back if we try it!
And Comet looks so pretty in pink! Even MB looks cute eating those treats! (COMET- that was my mom talking. I would NEVER make a comment like that about MB. - HJBG)
Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Good question - I did it in the evening and they were frozen the next morning. VERY FROZEN. It took about 20 minutes for them to lick them and it was somewhat warm. I don't know for sure if yogurt will freeze on its own - maybe the mushed banana made it freeze. I would guess anything with water content will freeze. It froze fine with strawberries, too. I didn't think my dogs would eat plain yogurt so that's why I added fruit. When I get more yogurt, I'll try it on its own.

UGH. My mom made fried "salmon croquettes" from canned salmon when I was growing up. I don't even think I could open a can of salmon - those little bones made me gag!
Holly - I'm sure Comet will be happy to hear that you would never say anything nice about monkeybutt! But you know you mom, she's always nice!

Cometdog's Mom - you can brag all you want! Comet absolutely looks so darling...when I saw that picture I just wanted to melt! The ribbons make her look even more special.
Thanks for the updated recipe - I'm going to have to try this. And I have to say Holly's mom, I've recently discovered that Mackenzie and Kobe both love salmon. Never really thought to give it to them before. So I would be very interested to know if Holly likes the salmon/ yogurt mix.
So here's to good eating!
