Love Never Ends
Thank you all for your kind words.
These past eight months I had been worried about how the end would come. Would we know when it was time? I didn't want Harley to suffer just to keep him around for us. The decision was actually very clear-cut yesterday. He hadn't moved much since we got back from church on Christmas Eve. He showed no interest in food or water on Christmas Day. Yesterday, he was not himself when I checked on him at 6 am. When the vet told me they had found another tumor, I knew this was it. They gave him some good pain meds and put us in the 'family room' while I waited for my husband to bring the kids over to say goodbye. They brought him a bowl of Alpo Filet Mignon that he gobbled up. I was happy to see him eat something. I can't remember the last time I saw my 16 year old son cry. I'm glad he could let out a little of his grief. The vet gave us a clay imprint of Harley's paw that my son wants to keep in his room.
I wish this hadn't happened on a holiday weekend. I was trying to get Harley in for an xray at our vet last Thursday and Friday, but the vets weren't available because of the upcoming holiday. I should have taken him to the 24-hr vet Friday, but it was Christmas Eve, I was running around town getting last minute gifts and grocery shopping before heading to church at 4. Christmas Day we were at my mom's from 2-9. Harley and our other golden were home alone. I'm sure Harley was in pain. I guess I really didn't believe it was another tumor. I wish our vet had taken an xray weeks ago when I first brought Harley in to check on his limp. It would have saved him weeks of pain 🙁
I have a lightly used, size medium, red Ruff-wear harness I would like to donate if there is a tripawd in need. Please let me know if you know of one.

That is very kind of you to offer Harley's harness to another pup in need. And it is exactly why we created the Tripawds Angel Exchange.

I'm so sorry to hear about Harley. His story seems very similar to Sadie's. She also lost her battle after 8 months post-amp the day we discovered a 2nd bone tumor. I'm glad you had the extra 8 months with him, and that you were all together with him at the end. They bring so much joy to our lives, I hope the memories of that joy help comfort you now.
Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end. On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

Dear Harley's mom,
Indi left us on December 17. I'm just now ready to make a blog post and tell all our friends that she is gone. I have the peace of knowing it was time and she was ready. I also have the sadness of missing my big girl, who walked me through my 20's. I liked the part in your note about your 16 year old son crying. My 30 year old boyfriend cried when Indi died. It is special when our men give us a peek of the emotional part of them that so often lies dormant. It just goes to show how much dogs move us and love us and touch our hearts. One of my favorite quotations right now, bitter sweet as it is for those of us whose dogs have left us, is:
"Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole."
Love, Raina, Spirit Indi's mom.
Indi the Saint Bernard mix had her front left leg amputated on August 31, 2010. She crossed over the rainbow bridge on December 17, 2010, because of a spinal injury, not related to cancer.
Lori,
I'm so sorry and sad to hear about Harley... It's always so diffucult when we loose our babies... but somehow, during the holidays, it just seems to make things worse...
Sending you a big hug!
Rest in peace Harley!!
