I picked up Ivan's records today from the Emergency Vet the night he was seen for his second collapse and belly bloat. The doctor had seen him the first time, too so he recognized him, and made note of this in the record.
I saw a specific part that I want to share with you:
"Ivan has improved since being adopted and dewormed. He still has low muscle mass, but has gained three pounds. His disposition is sweet. His prognosis is good with continued care."
You were right, those of you who said 12 days made a difference to him. He did respond positively to finally being cared for and fed properly. I thought my time with him was too short to make a difference, but there it was, in black and white - he was already getting better.
Thank goodness he had that before he died.
Awww, that is very bitter sweet. Even if "only" 12 days, you made a big impact on him, and he made a big impact on your life too.
I'm sorry it wasn't a happier ending. We were all pulling for him to recover, but there was too much damage done in the past. But he knew love, and he was getting better. Hang on to that part.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. I'm glad you had that confirmation that Ivan was improving. The ending wasn't what we had all been praying for but Ivan was so lucky to have been given that ending and not the one he would have suffered if you had not done what you did. I hope that gives you some comfort that your efforts were not in vain. In the short time that you and Ivan had together he knew love.

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
Thank goodness indeed, he absolutely knew what it was like to be loved and cared for. It was a lot of love packed into a very short time, which will carry on with him during his next "assignment" with humans.
