Who would have thought you could laugh more than cry on your first day without your fur baby? NOT ME! But it happened - thanks to the wonderfulness that is the Tripawds community.
You can read details and see pics here.
Thanks so much to Jim & Rene & Wyatt and Diane (Maximutt) & John (Maxidad) & Bernie & Linda for making it happen.
You guys are the best.
Special thanks to Bernie for the kisses.
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom. Our girl was there in spirit!
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
Just read your blog! I know I'm not suppose to cry because it's wasn't a sad blog...so let's just say these are happy tears.
That picture of the the pink sunset and shadowed tree is amazing. Of course she sent it to you!!!!
Happy tears. Happy tears. Happy tears.
More happy tears!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
We were devastated that we never got to meet Abby, but it meant so much to us that Jackie (Abby's mom) showed up on Fiesta Island to see all of us anyway. It turned out to be a wonderful day, with canine antics that were a fitting tribute to Abby's spirit. Fiesta Island might be the best off-leash dog area I've ever seen – a huge stretch of undeveloped land with long curving beaches, lots of trails to follow, hills to run up and down, trees, benches, and open areas full of tall green grass for dogs to chase around in. No wonder Abby loved it so much.
We got there a little bit before everyone else, so we had time to explore the island. Linda enjoyed her last few minutes of peace and quiet before Wyatt's arrival, taking some time to smell the flowers as Bernie bin Laden went marauding in the background:
Then Wyatt arrived, and had his joyous reunion with Bernie. They haven't seen each other for over a year, but immediately picked up where they left off…
They're perfect playmates, which isn't surprising since they share the same brain cell. Lots of pouncing…
Linda did her best to ignore their dopey antics, and instead concentrated on getting as wet – and as filthy – as possible. She's very good at both.
Fortunately for her, they soon decided it was more important to have a long, long, tug-o-war with Mr. bin Laden's favorite beach toy. What Bernie lacks in size and weight compared to Wyatt, he makes up for in sheer one-track minded stubbornness and an absolute refusal to ever let go. They must have tugged for ten minutes straight.
When it was finally over (which required some dog wrangling; since Bernie and Wyatt would have cheerfully chased each other until they passed out), we went to a local In-n-Out burger and had Abby's favorite meal in her honor.
And when the day finally drew to a close, we were rewarded with the rarest gift of all…
The sight of Bernie bin Laden so tired that he no longer had enough energy to be a pain in the butt.
Rest in peace, Abby. Today was for you.
Oh wow, these pictures are so wonderful! Thank you for posting them first, they are so much better than the ones I took. Eventually we'll have a movie, the footage came out pretty good….
What a beautiful, bittersweet day. As sad as we were that Abby wasn't there in person, we could all sense that she was there in spirit, being the pawty queen and making sure that everyone had a good time. Today was a celebration of life, completely.

When I read the first line of your thread that said that the meet up happened the day after Abby left, it sounded heartbreaking. But after reading your blog, it sounds like there could not been a better way to spend this first day. Thanks for sharing the day and the pictures!
The pictures are awesome... I know Abby would have loved it if she could have been there. What a wonderful way to celebrate her life and the beauty that she was.

Jenna & Spirit Chili Dawg
Diagnosed with OSA: 5/2/2011 Ampuversary: 5/11/2011 OSA returned in hip: 8/26/2011
Chili Dawg crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 8/30/2011 & is now pain free. He was my heart dog, and I miss him every day.
Our Tripawd Warrior Princess is already working miracles as an angel by wearing out Bernie Bin Laden! It's so wonderful you all went ahead with the get-together in Abby's honor. I can't think of a better support group for a grieving Tripawd pawrent than Tripawd friends. These pictures are awesome! Really captured the spirit of "fun on the beach". What a wonderful way to honor Abby.

What a fabulous day, and a fabulous way to honor Abby. She and Max and Jerry were watching, saying "If they think THAT is fun! Wait'll they meet us HERE!"
