I had to say goodbye today To the dearest friend I've known.
And no one understands like me Why my heart feels so alone.
By my side to comfort me When I wasn't at my best,
You even loved me when I'd shout, "stop being such a pest."
I won't forget the games we played Or your favorite place to sleep
The hardest part will be coming home And you're not at my feet...
Every day that precious face Filled my world with love and joy,
But now I sit here weeping As I gather up your toys.
I could count on you to be there, Like a shadow by my side,
So don't mind that it will take a while To stem these tears I cry.
I know I won't regret The way I let you in my heart,
Please understand that in my life You've played a central part.
But life carries on, and memories, they change after a while...
For one day I'll say your name again, and instead of tears...I'll smile

I read this poem often as I'm thinking of my Pup, I hope that it gives others the comfort that it brings me.
"Food, water, and treats have sustained me, but my love for you is what made me thrive. You couldn't be more loved, now or ever..."
Beautiful, thanks for sharing.
