Ah the lovely ups and downs of this dreaded disease.
How will I know if he is suffering or really struggling to breathe?
Ups and downs indeed, my people shared their ride on this emotional roller coaster in the blog.
They also discussed how they knew when my time had come.
They too had agreed to not let me suffer, nor lose my dignity. Ask yourself if Jack's good moments are still outnumbering his bad. If not, then ask yourself how you would rather remember Jack.
Yes, these are the toughest decisions you will ever have to make. When faced with the same concerns, we started this thread about questions to ask yourself when facing the final stages of canine cancer.
We hope this helps, if only a little.

OK - another day. Had a fine morning with Jack... all was well. He had a pretty active morning. Started struggling a bit more w/ breathing. I called my doc - spoke w/ her - she told me to sit tight. So I am. Gave her the clincal signs I was seeing - she still told me to sit tight. So, here I am. Sitting tight. He just went outside, peed and pooped, clear across the yard of course.... hopped back....now having some trouble catching his breath. To be expected. Soooooo -- just needed to type this out. Oh and she has heard of the metronomic protocol and said there are pretty much no side effects. So, if we make it to Monday, we may consider it. So, even w/ my call, telling her of his change in breathing, she is talking about treatment options.... and, she is one of those straight forward type vets - no sugar coating. If she was concerned, she'd tell me to bring him in. She didn't, so I am trying to calm myself so he in turn will calm down. Rollercoaster.
Sounds like Jack and you are both doing good! Day by day, pawstep by pawstep, celebrate the little victories. I have a feeling you'll make it to Monday. Hang in there!
