My three legged cat Tripod died suddenly and unexpectedly in January. I set up a memorial pillow that is her favorite pillow (it has her body divot in it!) and all of her favorite things. My sweet boy Tetrapod (our token four legger cat) has started going up to the pillow and burying his face in it to sniff it and then just laying there with his head on it. Things have been really hard, even with getting involved with fostering three legged kitties and other special needs cats from our local animal shelter. Every time he does that, my heart breaks for him. He loved Tripod so damn much, and while he has bonded closely with our newest addition to the family, I still worry about him so much. I just needed a place to share this. 🙁

You are such a Saint for fostering kitties in need. I just read your blog about Stanley (aka Roosevelt) and how, even though it was hard to rehome him, you are so happy he is doing so well and so loved. 💕
My take Tetrapod is he still feels Tripods energy presence and the pillow is a 'toichstone"for him to immerse himself in Tripods Spirit. Animals are able to "feel" And "see" energies with their senses that are invisible to us.
I think It's Tripod's way of saying "Howdy! I'm still here." That's just my take on it.
When you can, please share more of your Tripod with us. We would love to celebrate his life together with you.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Awww. It's true, animals grieve, and they do see things that we do not. I have no doubt that Triopod is still a strong presence, surrounding you all with so much love. I know this might sound a little out there, but try having a heart to heart with Tetrapod, let him know how you feel, and that Tripod's spirit will always be a part of your life.
I'd also love to hear more about Tripod and Tetrapod's life together, they sound like such a great match. I'm sure that in time, your quadpawd will have another companion who is just perfect for him.

I just want to do what I can to help all the kitties I can, especially the trikitties. And since I can't just adopt them all, fostering and shelter volunteering makes the most sense. 🙂
Stanley looks so happy in his forever home, and he and his adopter are just so utterly in love with each other that it really helps things hurt less. I also helped a sweet one eyed kitty go to her forever home the week after, and it definitely does seem to get easier at least. Although really, she had one too many legs to join the resident crew, lol!
I think that makes a lot of sense. It does feel like Tripod is watching over us closely, and I want to do her proud. And I hope that Tetrapod is feeling some comfort from this. I worry about him getting depressed. He was not great following Tripod's death, so I hope that this is his way of coping in a healthy way.
I hope to share more about Tripod's life when I have more time to heal. It's so hard being without her that I get choked up pretty much anytime I think about our 12 years together.

It doesn't sound out there at all! My partner actually ended up doing this and it seems like Tetrapod is doing better today. I also picked up some new types of toys to give him some more enrichment options and that is also helping.
Once I'm able to better handle it emotionally, I totally plan on sharing all of the awesome times that Tripod, Tetrapod and I shared together. Tetrapod has bonded strongly with the three legged foster to adopt cat that we adopted earlier this year, RR Jake. Tripod guided me to this little boy in need of an experienced tripod owner (he was brought into the shelter the day after Tripod died, and went through amputation shortly afterward with a very rough recovery that we nursed him through) and he's been a big help for managing Tetrapod's grief.
I call those two Team Socialization because they have been excellent at teaching cat manners to our fosters and bringing them out of their shell. 🙂

Oh I'm glad to hear that you and your partner are so in tune with animals, that heart-to-heart absolutely had to have made a difference for Tetrapod. I'm sure he's loving the extra attention and the goodies!
Team Socialization...that's terrific. Good to see the pride working together as a unit to be stronger and hoppier in life. Keep up the great work.

I thought I replied to this response, so I apologize for coming back around to it so late! Tetrapod is doing a lot better now, and he's spending a lot of time curled up on his favorite scratching pad, which is right next to the thermal heating mat that RR Jake loves so much. 🙂 We also don't have any fosters on the main floor with them right now (my current four legged foster has a strict no activity / crate rest requirement while recovering from a tenectomy) so they get some quiet downtime that is most likely helping with this too.
This pair is just the sweetest, most friendliest set of kitties I've ever encountered. Tetrapod goes into Mom-mode with new fosters, making sure that they're groomed properly and things. It's so adorable to see. Jake loves to initiate play sessions and let them chase after him, letting them "win". 🙂 They are both generally gentle and submissive, so they are good introduction cats for a wide range of foster personalities. Being able to be around other cats helps the fosters be more adoptable, so that's a great characteristic to instill in them. 🙂
I'm personally doing a lot better after the last round of tripods got adopted. I posted about it in my blog, but the people who ended up with my latest trikitty foster, Frieza, had so many similarities to what I was going through at the beginning of this year that it was a really healing experience for everyone involved. Plus I know that my foster kitty is in the absolute best hands for his needs. That helps so much.
