A very quick 4 weeks after diagnosis, we said our final good byes to our beloved Millie dog.
About 15 years ago, a friend told me that her husband's friend had to evict a tenant & when he went to check on the house, he had found that they left their dog behind. He wanted to take her to Animal Control but couldn't get close enough due to her growling and snarling. So me, my friend and her husband drove over there armed with various leashes, a crate, a catch pole and some bacon to try to save this aggressive beast.
What we found was a very terrified 8ish months old Dalmatian puppy! After shooing her into the basement and blocking off all hiding places down there (she kept going behind the toilet in the doorless partially finished bathroom), I was able to slip a lead over her head & quickly gained her trust with the bacon! One taste & she followed me very willingly to the car and went into the crate like it's something we'd done every day.
We had a health scare December 2012, and I thought I was going to lose her at a little under 13 years old, but after a week of debating whether or not to put her through major surgery at that age, I decided to have her spleen and its tumor taken out. The gamble paid off! She came home after just one night and was back to her old self within about 3 days time. AND her tumor was one of the very rare occurrences of a splenic tumor being benign!
Then in July/August of 2014, a limp that I thought was part of her arthritis became more and more pronounced. On August 27th, my world came crashing down. An X ray confirmed what I was suspecting, and I again was faced with the decision to put Millie though major surgery, one that would likely only buy us a couple more months. I reluctantly decided against it. Two years a go, she had no other issues but more recently she was showing signs of arthritis and her liver values had been creeping up. & I just wasn't sure how well she'd do as a tripawd.
This past week she was showing signs of increasing pain, and yesterday we had a friend come to the house to free her for good.
She has already sent me a new Dallie to help. This morning there was an email from the rescue we foster for & a young deafie needs a place to hang out for awhile. She already has a home, but it's not built yet & the adoptive mom did not want to try (or maybe wasn't allowed) to add a 3rd dog to the apartment where she is living during house construction. Regan arrives mid day tomorrow & we are very excited!
Even though Millie never became an official tripawd, this community's support really helped me cope. I wanted to thank you all so much and wish all the tripawd babies & their people much luck in their continued journeys. I'm sure I will still pop in here & there!
Sonya & "Millie"--born Feb 1999, diagnosed with OSA 8/27/14, set free 9/27/14
(RIP baby girl)
Sonya, I don't have the best words to offer at this point because this is just so sad, but in simplest terms I can say that she was one lucky dawg to have joined your pack, no dog could ever ask for more than what you gave her all these years. I'm sorry that she put on those wings, it's so hard. May her spirit stay strong in your pack and guide that new little pup as you pass along Millie's legacy and open your heart to another deserving dog who needs it most. Thank you for giving so much to these pups.
Millie will always be an honorary Tripawd here, you're both a part of this family forever.
Lots of hugs & condolences coming your way. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Sonya,
I'm so sorry you had to put Millie to sleep especially so soon after her diagnosis. But what a wonderful story that you found her in that house and rescued her. And she beat the splenic tumor. Sounds like she had a wonderful life with you and your family and you will continue on helping out dogs in need. Millie would be proud!!

We have just lost a beloved member of our family and our heart aches with you.
FIFTEEN PLUS YEARS of living with the most loving family a dog could have! I have no doubt her longevity was in a huge part to the love and care you gave herall her life.
You really, really did make a selfless decision yesterday to release her from her earthly body that was no longer serving her. Especially in light if some red flags with her liver. The surgery wo u ldprobably have tipped the scales out of her favor very quickly.
Thank you for sharing Millie's story with us. She earned our respect with her first post...and n ow to know even more about what a magnificent dog soul she is astounds me. What a strong, brace, forever spunky beautiful girl she is.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
I'm so sorry for your loss, Sonya. What a lucky girl Millie was to have found you! Thanks for sharing her story with us. Hopefully you can take comfort in the wonderful memories.
(((hugs)))
Deb and Angel Lexie* Diagnosed at age 13. Tried radiation first; wish we had amputated upon diagnosis (even with lung mets). Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.
I'm so sorry that you had to let Millie go. We know the heartache that you feel right now but know that Millie is running and playing and is healthy at the Bridge. Millie had an AWESOME life with you since she was rescued her from that abandoned home and neglectful owner. To live 15 years is an amazing accomplishment!!
I know that Millie is being welcomed into the pack at the Bridge and that she's finally free of pain.
Sending you a warm hug!
