It is with great sorrow that I have to report that Matey Girl has left us at around noon on Wednesday, April 1st. After a wonderful recovery from her front leg amputation (at 14 years of age), and fighting nasty tumors ( successfully), she finally succombed to old age. She has been dealing with a deteriorating mitral valve in her heart for years, and with the combination of old liver and deteriorating kidneys, "crashed" when she experienced a clot of sort in her brain. This left her with partial paralysis, or stroke like symptoms, which ,coupled with the fact that her heart was almost failing for the past week, left her parents with only one painful option.
I was lucky to be home, as I was working away for a week, and was forced home due to bad weather. I was with her for her 2 last weeks, every day, giving her tons of love and truck rides. I cannot imagine what it would have been like to have been away... We were lucky to have both been with her in the end.
We have learned alot from Mate, the will and determination she showed us was definately inspiring! I wish I had that kind of "salt", so to speak. Her independence, toughness, and loyalty were just a few of the amazing things she was made of. She will be missed for ever...
At least I am comforted with the fact that she is with her son, Blacky, who passed almost on the same day a year ago. Together with Jerry, I know she was welcomed to the other side warmly and immediately.
I love that creature more than most things/people on this Earth, and I know it will weigh heavily on my heart for a time to come.
However, I know I can say that her amputation surgery gave us almost 8 more wonderful months to share with her, which would not have been otherwise. Thanks to all the support we received on this site, Mate pulled through her amputation ordeal, and was able to enjoy 8 more months of unconditional love.
I realize we havent posted in a while, but I wanted to share the news with everyone, and hope everyone is doing well...
Thanks Jerry!

Run Free and happy Matey Girl...
No more pain.
I hear you about loving her more than most other things on earth...she will be with you always - in your heart and in your soul. You'll even see her and hear her in places around...just letting you know that she isn't far.
Grieve gently and in your own time.
May you have peace knowing what a great daddy you are and what a wonderful earth life you gave her. She's with all the other angels now...watching, caring and protecting.

14 years, what a wonderful long life to share. I know the pain is numbing now, but those years of beautiful memories will get you through. Run free, sweet Mate.

You are in my thoughts- I know how difficult it is to lose one of our babies. I hope you find peace in the memories you have, and the fact that Matey runs free now- without the pain. I also hope you see that they never really leave us- the lessons they have taught us stay with us forever, and their spirit will guide us forever.
Prayers to you.

Here is a photo of our girl taken just a few days before she left this earth. What a beauty.

Our hearts go out to you - what a beautiful girl! And what wonderful memories she has left you with. It is the one consolation that we have - the memories seem to last forever and I agree with you - I honestly do not think I could love anyone more. Only this forum understands that kind of love and we know what you are going through. Rest easy and know that she is because of your love.
