Today marks the 8 month ampuversary for our lovely Alfie. Sadly we had to say goodbye to him last week. He was pretty good up until Sunday, enjoying a busy weekend in the garden with the children. From Monday onwards he went downhill very quickly. This was so much kinder in many ways, but made it a horrible shock when the end came so fast. He had a painful inflammation in all three remaining legs and lung mets, by Wednesday morning he could no longer stand and was clearly in terrible pain. We knew the awful time we had been dreading had come, we were all able to say our goodbyes and to let him go peacefully. As many have said before, you are in doubt when the time has come.

Alfie's life was sadly short. He was only 2 years 4 months old when he died. He came to us when he was a year old, after we had lost another beloved choccy lab only 16 months ago. It has been a hard time for us. I'm so glad we had the privilege to know Alfie and to give him the best life we could, for the time that he was with us.

I wish you all luck and a long time with your tripawds. You have been a tremendous support to me, I'm sorry I haven't been a prolific poster, but I have checked in on you all regularly.

Best wishes,

Linda

Linda, I'm so sorry you didn't have more time with Alfie, but I'm sure with the support here, you made that time you had really count.  My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult period.  May the good memories soon replace your pain.

Linda, our hearts go out to you and your family, we can't imagine the depth of loss you are feeling right now. Oftentimes we wonder where the justice is, when a vibrant young dog's life is cut short. We try to take comfort in believing that the universe has to have some kind of plan when our hearts get broken so badly. Some day when you meet again, Alfie will explain things.

We are so very sorry. Thank you for sharing your story here. May you find peace and comfort in the beautiful memories you shared with your beautiful boy.

Linda

I am so sorry about Alfie. I know the pain too well of what you feel. Alfie was such a lucky dog so many people would have given up on him when you didn't. Alfie helped you make the decision to let him go. Titan did the same for us. I think it is a blessing because you never have to wonder if it was the "right" time to let him go.

Hugs to you

Linda - I am so sorry for your loss.  Alfie was such a young dog...my choc lab Jack was 4 when he died -- similar ending too with how quickly he declined.  But as you so aptly stated -- you had the privilege of being the one who got to care for him and love him for the time he graced this earth.  You were lucky to have each other.  I wouldn't trade the short time I had with Jack for anything.

Labbie hugs to you --

I am so sad for you and your family as you face life without Alfie. I believe there is a reason that he was given to you to love, you gave him the best care during his fight with cancer! Those of us who fight this fight along side you know your pain. It will be replaced with loving memories and just maybe Alfie has found your other "choccy lab" and they are running together free of pain and disease.

Be kind to yourself and take care.

Linda,

I am so  sorry about Alfie. We said goodbye to Wrigley at the end of March- I still miss her everyday.  She too was only 4 when she died. I know it just doesn't seem fair. I do believe though that God has chosen all of us, even if it is for a very short time ,to take care of his creatures and give them the best days on this earth that they could possibly imagine. You did that for Alfie- made his life the best it could be, and in the end gave him that final gift of love and sent him home to run free of pain.

My thoughts are with you and I send you peace in the days ahead.  Alfie will always be in your heart.

Dear Linda,

Alfie was very beautiful! I'm so sorry he had such a short time here with you. It's unthinkable that osteosarcoma would attack so young...I hope the researchers figure out why our larger dogs get it more often than smaller breeds. Our Abbey was part lab and would have been 12 yrs old this weekend. We said "good-bye" for now to her in October because of this same thief called cancer.

Alfie was very blessed indeed to live his short life in a loving home such as yours. I'm sure he is grateful you released him from his broken body and is now running free and happy through the heavenly fields, no doubt with others who have gone ahead. He'll look up one day and see you and be thrilled!

Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you adjust to his absence.

God's Peace to you all,

Diane

I'm so sorry to hear about Alfie.  I know how difficult it is.  One thing that we can be grateful for is that when they take a downturn, it usually happens fast and you know that they won't have to suffer for long.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Linda - I agree with Seanne - we are so blessed and honored to take care of these amazing souls no matter how long or short God gives them to us - it's just so painful when they leave us so soon. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this tough time. We wish you peace and hope that the pain can be managed with the loving memories you have with Alfie

Love to you
