I posted this yesterday in Maggie's blog, but I wanted to re-post here for those that don't frequent the blogosphere.
I got a package in the mail today from Maggie's Oncology Vet Hospital, called Bay Area Veterinary Specialists or BAVS. Mag had her amp surgery there and our Oncologist is there, Dr. Cecile Siedlecki.
I opened the package and found this book:
It is a book written to help children understand and cope with the loss of a dog. It is simply written with colorful illustrations.
When I opened the front cover I found this:
I took Mag to BAVS in March right after our regular vet diagnosed the melanoma tumor in her mouth. We sat with Cecile for close to a hour discussing options and deciding on what, if any treatment to pursue. Cecile has always been open and honest with me about Maggie's cancers and treatments. She was completely supportive of my decision not to aggressively treat the melanoma at that point in Maggie's life. After we were done talking Cecile took Mag in the back because she wanted to try and get a picture of the tumor in Mag's mouth. I thought that it was a little strange since we were not going to treat the cancer. I now know that she wanted to get a picture of Mag for this book. At that point we both knew that it was Mag's last visit there.
In the book God makes biscuits for the dogs, and because he has a sense of humor he makes them in funny shapes. He makes kitty-cat biscuits and squirrel biscuits and ham-sandwich biscuits.
My favorite are Ice-cream biscuits.
Thanks for sharing. Cythnia Rylant's Dog Heaven is indeed a great gift for anyone who's recently lost their dog. And it's a popular topic around here...
We received a copy from Luna's mom after setting Jerry free, and it really warmed our hearts. Genie's mom posted some excerpts from the book back in the early days of these forums. And Gineej wrote about receiving it as a gift after saying goodbye to Paris. Receiving a signed copy from your vet is just extra special!

I may cry that's so sweet! How incredible thoughtful!!!
I didn't even get a damn card when Rugby died! I think it happened so fast, they just let is slip and forgot. And now when I see this...I realize that there are wonderful vet's out there! I'll probably get a "Going to Miss Your Business" card when Comet goes!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Karen and the pug girls,
It is only fitting that Maggie was remembered by her oncology team – Maggie made a huge mark on all who were privileged to meet your crew. I know just how touching this rememberence gift was to you.
When Miss Cherry passed over, her oncology/surgery team sent us a copy of For Every Dog An Angel by Christine Davis. As with Maggie's book, in side both the front and back covers were very warm and touching messagages from the entire staff. I would like to think that it was more than just the sheet cake that we shared as part of Cherry's Three Day Birthday/Ampuversary/Care Givers celebration. It is "a magical little book for those who have found their forever dog and for those who hope to." I would like to share just one page from that book at this very touching time for so many of us."A dog can never really be separated from its forever person. Neither time nor space can ever come between them. So when the dog comes to the end of its earthly life, and must go on ahead without its person beside them, the gardian angel becomes a loving bridge that connects the two friends for as long as the person remains on earth."
Just as I know that I will never be really separated from Miss Cherry, I know that you will never really be separated from Maggie.

Another sweet read, and incredibly kind gesture. We reviewed For Every Dog an Angel in the Tripawds Amazon Selections blog when a Tripawd pawrent, Sandra, sent us a copy.
