My girl had her leg amputated on 12/18. It has been over 4 months and her hair is growing back patchy. Some of it near the top of her back hasn't grown but for peach fuzz and I'm worried about it as summer approaches. The skin looks black now. I'm assuming it is pigment change due to no fur being there. Any advice.

Hi Nicole & Lily Bear, thanks for joining. Your future posts won't require approval.

You know it can go either way with how quickly a dog's fur grows back. Some take longer than others, a lot longer. I would keep an eye on it and mention it to your vet but otherwise try not to worry! Always remember that Lily Bear wants you to be hoppy!

It can take some dogs up to 2 years to completely grow all of the hair back, especially if they have had chemo.  If it persists you might ask your vet about a thyroid test.  If the skin is black I would not worry but pink or white skin should be protected with sunscreen in the summer.

Thank you for your quick response. It was one of those nights when the panic hit me and I thought "oh my god! is this normal? " I can't tell you what a blessing this page is. Thank you many times over!

I used baby sunblock on Sassy even though she had dark pigmented skin (Rottie).  I was too worried about her getting sunburned or having to fight skin cancer on top of it all.  I found the spray kind worked the best you could rub it in better & it didn't leave streaks.

Did she try to lick it off? Murphy loves to lick where I have put on lotion. Not sure what he would do with sunscreen. He does have exposed skin now where his back leg used to cover it.

Kathi and Murphy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

nope Sassy never did but she was a different dog.  She never bothered stitches either.  She would wiggle out of the cone of shame no matter what it was like.  Besides I don't know that she could have reached that area as she was bigger but didn't even try so I never worried about it.

Headed to the beach next month. We will take some baby sunblock and try it out. Thanks.
