Thanks. As soon as she said, "I'm VERY concerned about what I saw on the x-rays" I almost didn't need to hear the rest. I'm just so sad. They did some blood work to see if he can tolerate steroids, if I get the okay then I'll start him on those tomorrow. She also gave me a bronchodilator and a prescription for pain medication. We will not be pursuing treatment beyond that. 🙁 The medication should help reduce inflammation in his lungs and help him breathe a little easier, but unfortunately it won't do anything for the cancer. It's difficult for me to compute.. he's acting normally aside from the occasional attacks, but to know that he's being consumed again by cancer.. horrible.
I did suspect that this would be the outcome, unfortunately. Ever time I've taken him to the vet, I've feared the worst, my husband told me not to worry, and I was always right.. intuition, I guess. And I know that cancer of his type reappears frequently in the lungs. I wish that (and I) had been wrong though.
Yes ,our instincts are always right. You took Alfredo in and you have always taken great care of him!
Know that and do not listen to a time amount left please. Animals can outlive those numbers too.
This will help calm everything down and make Alfredo comfortable and live his life to the fullest. Thank you for posting the update here too!
I see you updated your blog will check that out too. Alfredos story will help others in this journey have no doubt on that!
Spoil spoil spoil and love love love him! Thats all Alfredo could ever ask for!
This is not the news anyone wants to get and feel so bad you have!
Sending you the biggest of hugs. My heart hurts for you!

Sorry this was the outcome. Just because he has mets doesn't mean that he doesn't have more cuddles, playing and loving to do. Enjoy every day, one day at a time!
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
Hey, thanks for the nice words. What are the next steps with your kiddo?
Fredo seems good.. still has almost daily breathing attacks. I have had zero luck administering medication despite trying everything I can think of. The problem is, if we force him to take pills, he gets so worked up that....he has a breathing attack. I mean. It's horrible. So, I spoke with the vet and instead of daily steroids, we're going to get him a steroid injection that lasts 6-8 weeks. This makes me nervous because of the side effects of the steroids, but I don't know what else to do. He's having trouble breathing. This is not the vision of comfort that I envisioned for him. We do have buprenorphine gel that I put in his ears daily, just to help him relax. It seems to help, but I would like the chance to get actual steroids in his system to try to reduce inflammation in his little lungs. It's sad. I'm trying not to think too much about the way way future because I know he's not going to be around much longer, and that's heart-breaking. Our world really deserved more Fredo time.. he's the best. It's so hard owning pets.
On the other hand, I took his sister (adopted sister lol) to the vet, and she is perfectly healthy (if not a little overweight, but that's a work in progress). So, there's that.
FREDO!! You take your pills!! Now you're gonna have a shot in your cute little kitty butt instead!! I do think it will help though, so that's a good thing!
I know this is hard, but you are doing a great job of staying in the moment...just like Fredo is. And I don't think he jas any intention of going anywhere anytime soon!
Lots of love
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
You can crush the Prednisolone (Its a little white pill) into a powder, and then mix it in something Alfredo loves. Vanilla icing:) he wont know its there its tasteless. I use a mortar and pestle to crush pills, you can buy pill crushers or use a bowl and the back of the spoon and smash it. We use baby food turkey and gravy , our guys love it like it right up. Alfredo like cat milk, tuna juice ? Really if he loves the icing that would be a treat for you both he gets the meds without stress. Just some ideas to try.
I tried! I got him to take it once with whipped cream, but he must have caught a hint of the med somewhere because now he won't go near whipped cream. So sad! LOL. The pred was VERY noticeable in the whipped cream (I tried it, ew) but the bronchodilator med wasn't too bad, it's actually kind of sweet. He took his Onsior post-amputation like a champ, I think he even liked it.. so I'm sad he isn't as receptive to these meds. We'll figure it out. The vet said we could get an inhaler for the broncho med but I feel like he'd take one look at that contraption and just freak out.
Must not the little white pill we had then. That stinks. Are you syringing the other to him? you could crush that pill and add liquid to syringe him. I think if he hates the med taking then the injection might be better quality of life for Alfredo. He might surprise you on the inhaler. Once he sees it helps him breathe that will change the contraption 😉 Just saying cats are so smart . You have a plan either way so hoping something works out for you guys and Alfredo can feel better! Glad to hear sister is doing well too!
You might be right haha. He HATED me putting the buprenorphine gel in his ears (he'd tuck his ear flat against his head lol.. so cute) until he put 2 and 2 together and realized it made him feel better. The other one is smaller and we're just kind of forcing that one down for now. We also tried a pill popper (the syringe-looking thing) but that didn't work.
I'm glad you guys seem positive about the injection. I hope it helps!
