Greetings,,, I am awed by all of you.... You only need to see the joyful dogs in the masthead of this website to know you are all miracle workers.   My 7 - 8 year old yellow lab mix Homer herniated a disc getting out from under a bed frame.  He had a surgery to decompress and they found a ten inch long blood clot.... They feared the worst... But and it is a big BUT, after a few weeks, he wagged his tail, he had gastric control, he had deep pain response in the bottom of each foot, and finally he started to stand up and often stands to eat dinner!  He has had hydrotherapy, elec stim you name it at Twinbrook Animal Hospital and I can't say enough about the staff there.
I bought him an Eddy's wheels and he tears around and places  and tracks well in the cart.  It doesn't have the leg strengthening we had hoped for.

However, his bad leg has a dislocated kneecap and with the combination of cost and all the negatives that go with a second operation as far as recovery goes, we are hoping to have Homer become a tripod.   On a daily basis, we do stands and I regularly see him start pushing up and off to get up..... He is an Alzheimers therapy dog and I am a round the clock cargiver.....So you get the picture.  I void his bladder 8 times a day and keeping up with the other end is not a picnic around this house I can tell you.

A friend suggested making some kind of overhead spring support and getting him to hop that way.    IS there anyone out there that can suggest a technique and or somthing I could make or sew ( we have a wood and metal shop ) that could complete his recovery. I will then place an article in several publications giving tripawds all the credit.

Signed Homey and me  Kitty Fischer  ps it is better to hop on three than drag your self around on the ground.........Embarassed

Are you sure that he is not a candidate for surgery to replace the kneecap?  It doesn't cost that much more to do vs an amputation and recovery is quite quick.  Even if the ACL is ruptured I would still consider repair.  Amputation should be your last option in an animal with questionable neuro status (unless of course cancer is involved).

Frankly the 1.800. is quite steep given that I am a full time Alzheimer's caregiver and my income is stagnant.  All of us on this end fear another surgery, another risk of infection, and another long recovery ( that I would have to manage ).   I am sewing a suitcase type of body harness that I would design to be at the end of my natural arm's length.  It looks like one in the tripawds random photos.   Too, I am calling the surgeon to see if he has anyone who has "tripoded" after a long recovery.

What appears to be ideal, is to have one person on each side of the dog, pull back and isolate the bad leg, and have the trio walk forward at a steady and even pace.  Each person would lift up on a sling with what would be a normal hopping pace.
I will get back to you if this works and will supply photos to prove.

I hope that anything I learn can be passed on to anyone else in the future.

You might want to check out the AST Support Suit. We didn't use it for Jerry, believing it is better suited for heavier and less mobile dogs. We do not sell the AST product, only the Ruff Wear harness, but made the product video when they first launched the Support Suit. It is custom made, and probably has improvements since we tested it. Best wishes to you...
