Dakota has been taking tetracycline and niacinimide for his discoid lupus and it is working wonderfully. I called for a refill Friday and got a message from his vet yesterday saying the tetracycline is unavailable until sometime after the new year. He said I could try to find it on my own, and I did poke around. Every online veterinary med site said the same thing, only they had no guess for availability.

I'm not sure why this is, siince tetracycline isn't rocket science and is commonly needed. I have a couple of questions, though. Is human-grade tetrcycline also out of stock? (I've had many a vet write a script for meds that they didn't have and I got filled on my own.) And more importantly: Will this harm Dakota? If he goes a month without the tetracycline, what will happen? Should I keep giving the niacinimide on its own? Will it help keep the lupus at bay?

D's vet has never had a lupus case before so he will apologize but be unable to answer. He's pretty fascinated by Dakota's lupus and the responsiveness he's had.

Thanks for any help that's out there. I appreciate it very much .Seeing the transformation in Dakota's nose after this treatment was truly astounding and I want him to feel well.

OH GOSH!  What is the world coming to???!!!  I'm glad I got my flu shot!

Good luck on finding it!  We used to get antibiotics from the human pharmacy for Comet. (because I'm cheap that way!) She was in Cipro for life for diskospondylitis -supposed neck disc infection. (spell check.)

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Yes, I'm wondering if the human stuff is also impacted and out of stock. I am going to wait for Target's pharmacy to open and phone to ask them. If they have it, I will ask my vet tomorrow to write a script for me. But...what if the human stuff is also out of stock? Maybe the world will end! wink

Tetracycline is not a really common antibiotic for people anymore (at least at my pharmacy.) We have some in stock (it comes in 250mg and 500mg capsules.) I haven't had to order it lately, so I don't know if there is a supply issue. I don't work today, but if you have trouble finding it, let me know and I can look around for you.

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

Oh Lisa, that might be just the ticket! If I can't find it locally, could D's vet just call your place? Or would we need to do a fax? Knowing that is helpful. To refresh memories (or answer the new and curious), this is what poor D-Dawg's nose looked like pre-treatment:

Now it looks like a healthy dog nose. I don't want to go back to this ugly, painful, bleeding thing.

We usually script out the tetracycline to a human pharmacy since we don't dispense it too often and I was not aware that it was on backorder.  I would try a large chain like Walgreens.  If that fails I wonder if your vet could substitute doxycycline for now since that is also very safe if needed long-term.

Yes, the vet can just call it in. We would probably have to add him to our data base, no big deal. I'm pretty sure you'll find it locally, but if not let me know (I can mail it to you.)
