Tapering off Gabapentin

I wanted to know when most dogs taper off of Gabapentin. My Great Dane is 4 weeks 3 days post op and my vet says that it should be ok to start tapering her off of it. She had some complications after surgery so she is still on it. She does not seem to be in any pain. She still has to go to the vet every 3 days to have some irrigation done because she has a channel under the incision that hasn't completely closed up yet. She tolerates the irrigation just fine and doesn't seem to mind it at all. I also wanted to know if there are withdrawal symptoms when weaning off of the Gaba. I already reduced the dose from 2 pills twice a day to 1 pill twice a day and last night she woke up in the middle of the night panting for a short while. She has seemed fine today though.

Sorry for the delay in posting but I have been without a computer for a few days!

Most dogs post-amp are usually off of the gabapentin after 2 weeks. However your dog is still undergoing potentially painful flushing, etc so it is fine to continue longer.  I frequently use gabapentin to aid dogs with chronic arthritis and it can be given daily long-term with very few side effects.
