I put this here cause I'd like pams advice! Feel free to move it if you feel it should be in the nutrition forums.

I asked my vet about all the supplements for Dante and such. He's definitely okay with it and thought it was a great idea - but I am wary of the dosing. All of the dog ones I can find say "Do not use for puppies" or "For adult dogs only."  I discussed this with my vet last week and he said he can't see a problem with putting Dante on them as a puppy, but really couldn't give me much as far as whether or not the dosage should be altered or given any differently than it would for an adult.

Thoughts? I'd like to buy human supplements because they're cheaper but I can't get a straight idea of how much to give him! Is there any harm in giving too much? I'd like to give glucosamine & Chondroitin.

There is some debate on the safety of giving glucosamine to growing pups, especially if large or giant breed.  I would only give supplements  if your dog has reached his adult size or if there is a problem such as hip dysplasia.  A 50 pound dog would need 500 mg glucosamine and 400 mg chondroiten daily for maintenance.

That is interesting Pam....Whiskey's ears haven't come up yet (he is apparently a late bloomer and has a heavy coat...soft coat that most mal people only want in the line, NOT on the dog lol) and my friend posted on her mal list.  A solution that was made by more than one person was to give him glucosamine hydrochloride...I asked my vet if that would do anything about strengthening the cartilege (that was the purpose..they also suggested shaving inside the ear...it would drive him nuts growing back I think!!) and she said there was absolutely no facts behind it doing anything for the cartilege and she would sell me the suplement if I wanted to try it but that she felt it was just a waste of time and money.  I decided if it wasn't necessary to cram any pill down his throat, I had had enuf of that for the last three months....Maybe when he is full grown like you suggest, just to stave off problems down the road, but I'm not sure of that either.

Thank you Pam!

I will hold off then. These two are slow growers and at almost 7 months they're still gaining consistently and growing like little bean poles.  Interestingly enough, the glucosamine is the only supplement I found that said it was OK for puppies! It was the combo pills that were not.

My vet also said more or less the same thing about large and giant breeds. These guys will be hovering around large breed size when they're done growing, so it's best I wait I guess!
