Dear Pam: I'm a little puzzled because I've noticed Romeo's urine occasionally has a strange, strong smell (exactly like when a person eats asparagus). This has happened a few times over the past week. He did see a new vet acupuncturist on Friday and received a B 12 injection which was something new for him, but I'm pretty sure I smelled the "asparagus smell" before then. I've also noticed when he goes out to pee he seems to pee quite a bit more, but he's not asking to go out more or having accidents. He does have a very large fatty tumor in his groin area--although it does not seem to bother him.
Romeo has had two vet appointments the past two weeks. One just for a check-up---the vet performed a thorough "hands on" physical but we did not do any xrays or lab work. Then he had the acupuncture on Friday. Both visits the vets thought he looked great!
He is probably getting a little more omega three. He also takes Vit E, Chinese herbs, and Dasiquin. He takes pepcid at night. We did try one dose of Metacam this week---but he can't seem to tolerate NSAIDS. He eats I-D (ever since having a couple bad bouts of pancreatitis as an adolescent). He also does get table treats and loves to eat horse poop. Romeo will be ten in January.
He's acting normal, but the smell concerns me. Could it be cystitus? Should I take him in? I'm trying not to freak out. Does it sound serious? I'm assuming it's not related to cancer, but I'm worried. Thank you so much, Eve (and Romeo)
It is true that B vitamins can change both the color and the odor of the urine. I have not noticed any odor form the Dasuquin, which all of my dogs take. I have Kona on some herbs and have not noticed anything so unless you just started those it is probably not from herbs. Male dogs are not prone to cystitis and he is not taking Cytoxan but I would have your vet run a urinalysis just to be sure. A urine test could help rule out infection as well as diabetes and kidney failure.
Pam
