So I've already left a message the vet tech from Gerry's shelter, but in case anyone with expertise (or even just experience) can get back to me here first – is one staple coming out a concern? I can't even tell where it came out from (possibly the very top). I've been watching him pretty closely, avoiding putting on the e-collar (since they didn't even have it on him at the vet), but I was in a different room and heard him let out a yelp (thought we had some phantom limb pain starting up). I noticed on the floor when I went to check on him though that there was a staple there (a couple feet from where he was laying, which seems a little odd, but it looks like one of his staples and I rarely have occasion to use staples at home).
Okay, so that's probably more than the necessary info for my question, which is, is the loss of one staple a concern? If the incision appears fine?
He has an e-collar on now and isn't making much of a fuss about it at all. I should have just put it on from the start. I imagined the worst when the person at the vet said he didn't handle the e-collar well, so they had left it off so far. I was picturing him using his powers of crate destroying on it.
Ah, yes I have missed these days of being a worried, rambling pawrent. Did anyone actually think I'd be any better the second time around?
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

One staple should not be a big deal... They are usually put in pretty close together... so unless you see a gaping wound... just keep it clean and watch to make sure no other staples start coming off!
Give that cute Gerry of yours a big kiss from me!!!
Angel Jake's Mom
Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
Zoe lost one too, her first day home, I paged the surgeon, she was like no big deal, I guess they also have stitches on the inside too. I would just keep an eye on it but I'm sure you will be. Gerry is so cute, I admire you for working in the shelter and adopting him. Hopes for a speedy recovery.
Phew! Thanks folks. I figured it would be fine, but was afraid to assume anything. The vet tech got back to me pretty quick too, so that's good to know.

Glad that you got the answer, but from the question I would have to say that the worries never really get easier no matter how many times. Please keep us posted and next time we will try to be prompt.
Gerry is definately in the care of a wonderful set of hands (and heart).
