My sweet Jager had his rear leg amputation in March 2017.  He went through 4 rounds of chemo.  He is a 8 year old pitbull who weighs 88lbs.

His cancer is back and spreading fast in his lymphatic system.

He has a tumor that has reached the skin, and smells so horrible.

Does anyone have any advice on how to treat, cover, get rid of the smell?

Jager!  Sweet Pittie Jager!' Sorry this nasty poece of crap disease is rearing it's ugly head again.

How has Jager been doing overall the past five (?) months?

I don't have any advice on "masking" the smell....but maybe our Volunteer Vet will.   I know those open tumors can be stinky.  Keeping the area clean and keeping the fur away from it may be helpful, vut with Vet guidance of course.

Has Jager's Onco suggested any additional protocol to keep things at bay longer?   Which chemo did Jager do?

And btw, we sure would like pictures of thos sweet boy!!

Lots of higs

I'm sooo sorry to hear about the mass. I know those things happen quickly.

Please do not try to do anything to the mass until you consult with your vet to determine next steps.

Jagger may need immediate treatment for the tumor that can help give him a good quality of life, but only your vet can guide you there.

Thanks and keep us posted.

I have contacted his Vet, but no answer on what to do for the smell.

They had him on Doxorubicin.  Before the 4th treatment we did a scan, and the vet said they seen no growth and everything looked great.  I asked for a copy of the results from the last scan before I schedule another scan.

2 months later, he has a growth that you feel that stretches to his pelvic area.   I did take him to dr where they did test it for cancer and it is.  Surgery is not a good option, and the drug route they were going for is $1500 a month.

So, that leaves us just hanging on.  I have been an emotional mess for 2 weeks.  The smell from his tumor is horrible.

Jager is ADORABLE!

My dog Izzy had a stinky mast cell tumor ... it was truly revolting! There wasn't a ton I could do but try to keep it as clean and dry as possible, but it literally smelled like fish. Not sure what kind of tumor Jager has or if it's in a spot that's easy to keep clean or is more prone to getting stinky. Izzy's was in between the pad of her foot and toes, so we had to keep it bandaged to prevent rupture - more sever rupture - so it wasn't getting much air and that made it smellier.

Her onco had me soak her foot in a diluted butadiene solution to help dry it out. Again, not sure where/what you're dealing with but that was what we did.

Hope your vet has some suggestions as well and I'm sure our volunteer vet will chime in when able 🙂

Give that sweet pup some hugs from me!

They often get secondarily infected so your vet should be able to prescribe an oral antibiotic such as amoxicillin or metronidazole to get rid of the odor from the anaerobic bacteria.
