I've read through all the seroma threads and everything on the website about them..I believe what Jill has is a seroma , before I took her home, the vet described it to me as a build up of fluids. Everything I'm reading on the boards though suggests seromas leak fluid though. Jill just has what looks like a big fat belly next to the top of her scar, like blubber. I was wondering if how long is normal for that to stick around for? It's been 8 days since her surgery. Here is a picture (if I can figure out how to insert a picture correctly.....), it's what looks like a big fat tummy but I swear she's not overweight haha

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Yes a seroma is an accumulation of fluid often seen after an amputation. Sometimes a surgical drain is needed but most of the time the fluid is reabsorbed by the body.

Hank had those fluids after surgery. They went away by themselves after about a week. Jill is so cute! I want to hug her.

Just wanted to chime in that I had the same reaction to that pic of her - so cute even with a big ol' incision and seroma .
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

Dr. Pam's description is exactly what happened to me. Mine didn't leak but it looked like I was hiding a gallon of water in there. When it wouldn't go away after a few days, the vet just poked me with a syringe and drained it, it was painless.

Maggie didn't have a seroma after her amp surgery, but she had a decent sized one after her first tumor removal surgery. The incision went from behind her shoulder around to her chest, and the fluid built up at the low point. It never leaked, and we didn't have to drain it. I think it was totally gone in a week or two.

I've been seeing a few things online about putting a compress (I'm not sure cold or hot?) on it...is this something I should try? it's 9 days now and it's still a big fat belly of seroma !

A combination of both warm and cold can help re-absorb it back into the body. Start with warm to get the circulation going, then cold to reduce swelling. Remember to use a towel around the hot/cold pack. You may want to call your vet to have the fluid drained though, 9 days is a long time.
