Frank, an 8 month old yellow lab, had his surgery this past Tuesday (5/2) and has been doing really well! He's supposed to go back to the vet Friday to get his stitches out! The thing is, we are currently in my college town and since the semester is ending I'm supposed to be heading back home (a three hour drive) the day after he gets his stitches out. He'll be 11 days post-surgery then. I'll definitely consult his vet on this, but wanted to see if there was any advice on here about post surgery travel, if it's too soon, things like that.
Thanks! -- Hailee & Frank
Hi Hailee!
SO glad Frank is doing well! Dogs are SO amazing, aren't they? I would say the trip will be just fine, but if Frank is prone to licking and will be in the back of your vehicle where you can't see or intervene, be sure he's got his cone and t-shirt (or whatever you use) on. My dog Izzy had her surgery out of town and was released the same day, so we made a 2.5 hour car ride the day of her amputation. She did just fine but I did have a travel companion to keep an eye on her while I drove. Also, she was there to help me get sweet girl into the house, which was up a flight of stairs, but you won't have any of those problems since Frank is certainly walking and peeing and doing all kinds of things that probably make you nervous! lol
I am no doctor but I am 100% sure it will be just fine!
Good luck to you and your buddy! 🙂
Momma to the world's most beautiful American Bulldog, Izzy!! Lost her front leg to OSA 9/18/15. Diagnosed w MCT in June 2016. Celebrated her 1 year ampuversary with knee surgery on 9/18/16! MCT recurrence in Dec 2016. Happy & hungry til nearly 14, earning her wings on 7/31/17.
Welcome Hailee and Frank!
Why did young Frank lose a leg? A front or back leg?
As Izzy's mom said many dogs have to travel for hours right after surgery to get home, so Frank should do fine on your trip. The thing I would be concerned about is that you can keep him safe in the car and keep him from standing and moving around too much. Since he is still early after surgery his balance is probably not great yet, especially in a moving car.
We would love to hear more about your boy and maybe see a picture or two (or many).
