Hello.   My pom/mix didn't have her leg removed (yet) we tried surgery first to see if we could save it.  But my question is due to pain.  They put her on the Fentanyl patch, but I don't think it's helping that much.  They said to leave it on for 5 days then remove it and start her on Buprenex .25ml.  Well how long do I have to wait to give her the Buprenex after I remove the patch?

The specialist that did the surgery isn't in, and my vet is closed on the weekends.  But I have to take the patch off tonight at 8pm.

Hi Patty, thanks for joining but sorry you're in this tough situation. Tell us more about your pup, what's going on with her leg?

I'm not a vet but my best advice is to call the clinic back (is it a 24/hr clinic?) and ask to speak to someone NOW for help. If not a 24/hr clinic, your vet's office should have a recording with a number you can call in case of emergency.

Normally you want to stay ahead of the pain and not let it get out of control by providing consistent relief, but you do need to get specifics from a pro if your at all in doubt. By any chance do you have the post-surgery discharge instructions handy? The dosage frequency should be spelled out there.

I'm sorry I wish I was more help! Stay tuned, one of our vet experts may chime in soon.

You can use Buprenex with a Fentanyl patch so I am not sure why they told you to wait.
