Dear All
Hoping to get some informed information which will help us Mischa move forward with what has been very successful (so far) treatment.
Quick history:
Mischa is an 11 year old female Australian Cattle Dog X
She had a hind leg amputation September 2011 for osteosarcoma.
Biopsies and ultrasound showed that this was secondary tumour from an unusually located transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder (she has never had any symptoms of bladder or urinary tract problems, seems this is because the mass was in an uncommon area). This TCC had caused secondary tumour in leg and spread to one lymph node.
Began treatment with oncologist in September with daily medication of Piroxicam and three weekly chemo treatment with Mitroxantrone.
She completed her 6th chemo treatment this week and amazingly bladder mass has almost disappeared with only a thickening of the bladder wall evident and there is no spread to any other areas of her body and lungs are clear.
Her oncologist is offering the follow options now she has had her 6th treatment to try and maintain the positive results we have seen.
Options are continue with Piroxicam and either:
a) six weekly treatments of Mitroxantrone or
b) treatment such as Palladia
Her bloods are normal, she is in amazing general health and she has had no obvious side effects other than the positive results to the chemo. Still living life to the full....
Has anyone experience or comments on which course of treatment to continue with? My first instinct would be to continue with the Chemo on a 6 weekly basis but would be interested to hear if anyone has any other experiences with this. I have not been able to find much about Palladia that would suggest it is worth switching to.
Oncologist has said I could choose to do nothing further other than the Piroxicam but I don't think this is an option as she has responded so positively to treatment so far.
Thoughts or comments anyone?
Thanks a million.

I am confused; did your dog have 2 different cancers or did the transitional cell carcinoma metastasize to the bone? Osteosarcoma is a separate type of tumor and it looks like your oncologist has just treated for TCC and not OSA. If it is in fact only TCC then it is reasonable to maintain the dog on piroxicam and consider a different chemo agent like carboplatin in case the bladder tumor recurs.
Pam
Thanks Pam. Our vet belived the CCT metastasised to her bone but the osteosarcoma was diagnosed before the CCT. The follow up ultrasounds and biopsies found the problem in the bladder following the amputation. The oncologist has been treating the primary tumour which has responded well to the chemo. Now we are trying to maintain this and prevent further spread.
Thanks
Rebecca
