Hello--
I was advised to start a topic here from the recovery and treatment forum. My 7 year old shephard mix (45lbs) had her front leg amputated yesterday following a cancer diagnosis. She came home today and doing well overall. However, she seems to have some urine dripping out here and there. She went to the bathroom outside. Not sure if the leaking is normal for the first day after. She has had a rough week. First the biopsy on monday, which we had trouble controlling the bleeding, until the biopsy came back yesterday. Then the amputation. So needless to say, she has had a very rough week. Any help or info would be great. She is dealing with this better than I am 🙂
Doug and Kenya
Doug and Kenya, thanks for sharing your story here. Kenya has been through so much in such a short period of time, maybe this is a side effect? I don't know really but it seems like something you'd want to mention to your vet. Let us know what the vet says OK?
And by the way, Kenya is one of the prettiest names we've ever heard for a girldog.

Sometimes female dogs have a weak urinary sphincter muscle, so they will leak urine. Tazzie used to have this and took estrogen (DES) for about a year before her leg was amputated. However, whenever she had to be sedated and after she took morphine she would always leak for a few days until the drugs were out of her system (due to the muscle relaxation caused by the narcotics). I took her off of the DES when we started chemo and she has not needed it again.
I have not read your other post yet but if she has had a rough week she might be leaking due to drugs or stress. Other less likely possibilities are a bladder infection or a neurologic disorder. If she does not improve I would have your vet check a urine sample and maybe prescribe meds for urine leakage if indicated.

Thanks Jerry Pam and Tazzie--
Kenya thanks you for the compliment on her name 🙂 We made it through the first night. I slept on the floor next to her iwhile she curled up in the bed that I made for her because she wasn't thrilled about me going to far away from her. The urine issue seems to have stopped, so it must have been the stress and/or drugs. She seems to be doing ok. She is drinking water and eating up the lean ground beef that I cooked up for her. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. THanks so much for making this time easier. It can feel very lonely and scary, both for me and Kenya.
