Hi all:

I was just wondering if any of you who are going through metronomic protocol are having any issues such as vomiting or appetite?

Tika did her chemotherapy with flying colors and for the past several weeks was handling her Piroxicam and chemo drugs fine, but now this week she's thrown up twice.  Both times at night.  Her coughing is also back, only at night though.  Walking and swimming (yes, our pool is open and she's the happiest doggie around!) doesn't seem to set her off.

She's been going off and on with a bit of fussiness with her food also, but she has always been like that.

We are just trying to figure out what might be going on with her.

We've rented an RV to go on a trip this weekend (wonder where we got THAT idea from?Laugh) to take the girls on a bit of an adventure.

Sorry Tika is having trouble with the meds. Jerry only vomitted a small amout of bile once, when we rushed him to jump in the truck immediately after giving him his metronomics on an empty stomach. So don't do that. Jerry was on Cytoxan though, not Piroxicam. We also read that morning is the best time to give metronomics . (But I'm no vet!)

Can't wait to hear about your RV adventure ... how fun!

Tika is on Cytoxan also every 48 hours. But last night it was just the Piroxicam.

We have been giving in the eve so that we can make sure she's getting her pills on a full stomach, we'll see.  It maybe just a normal 'doggie getting into something in the yard' situation.  Everything has a different perspective when there's the BIG C looming in the background.

I'll be taking lots of pics this weekend, I'm sure it'll be cute.

It is not that uncommon to see GI upset from Piroxicam.  Any blood or dark stools?  I would mention this to your vet at your upcoming recheck since they might want to switch to another NSAID.  An alternative is to add a drug called misoprostol which protects the GI tract from the side effects of NSAIDS.

Hi Kim.  We just started metronomics Saturday (4/25), so we haven't had much experience, but I'll tell you what I've noticed so far.  Max doesn't seem to be affected by the medicines.  He also takes cytoxan, but every 24 hours (as opposed to your 48 hours).  We were also told to give it in the morning.  We give all his medicines mixed in with his food.  He gets the Cytoxan and furosomide (probably spelled that wrong) with breakfast, and actos and piroxicam with dinner.  Things are going well so far, but again it's only been 3 1/2 days.  We also give  him the maintenance dose of K-9 Immunity and Transfer Factor, again mixed in his food, split between morning and evening meals.  Hope that helps, and that Tika gets to feeling better.

Nova is on Piroxicam, and to avoid stomach upset, our vet recommended she take it with a regular human Pepcid pill. That seems to do the trick.  She was on Cytoxan, but we had to discontinue it since she had blood in her urine. Apparently Cytoxan can cause bladder damage. We might start back on it, but for now she is off it.

Hope that Tika feels better!

Hi Kim and Tika -

Barney was on metronomics for just over 6 months.  His protocol included Cytoxan, Doxycyline and Metacam.  He did have an upset tummy a couple of times, but we never knew if we could really attribute it to the metronomics .  Late last fall we had to discontinue the Cytoxan because he (like Nova) got hemorrhagic cystitis from it - and, as yet the vet recommends he not resume the Cytoxan part.

Anyway we're so happy that you're getting to take a little RV trip!  Hope that Tika feels much better by the time you leave.

Hugs,

I would also recommend doing a chest  Xray just to know what you are dealing with and also to maybe figure how much time you have left with him. We are sorry for your bad news and wish you guys the best. Make every day count.

With the fussiness about the food we were recommended to give our dog peppermint, because it stimulates appettite. We are going to give it after her next chemo because she is normal afterwards but does not want to eat.

Hi all:

Thanks for your support.  Tika seems to be doing much better.  We also just witnessed what might be the real culprit.

The little brat drinks half of our pool which she jumps in to swim, it's hilarious I'm trying to get a good video of it.

Not hilarious because I think it's probably giving her gastric distress.  I'm trying to remember if we went through this last year.

Now that the pool is cleaned up and balanced out and not such a novelty it'll be interesting to see how things improve.  The cough is still there, but hmmmm, chlorinated water?  yes, I was a kid at the city pool once.....long long ago.

She did decide today to climb up our outside stairs to the upper deck.  That was a first, and considering that they are narrow I was pretty impressed (and scared she'll hurt herself).   The snarky little malamute attitude is back full force--who'd of thunk I'd be thrilled to see that!

She's still on for her recheck (Xrays and bloodwork) for the 18th. But right now she's looking good, both dogs are trying to figure out what "ya wanna go camping?" means.

Have a great weekend all!  Mine just started!

Update on the Puke-a-mute.

She had a few more episodes including one camping, so we figured that ruled out the pool water theory.

We called the oncologist and we put her on 40mg of regular ole Pepcid.  That seems to be working.  When we see her in two weeks, she's gonna check the kidneys/urinary tract/etc to make sure everything is okay.

The pepcid seems to help.

All in all, she's still her happy sloppy self.  I think we overreact on everything now because we have some latent guilt about waiting too long when she went lame last November.  Poor dog sneezes and we are all over her!

We all tend to overreact when it comes to our furry cancer heroes, but we don't allow any regrets here! 😉
