Mackenzie - Rear Leg Shaking - Trying to figure out what's going on

Aw, Kami, what a worry for you.

Catie's right rear leg often shakes when standing still.   It's done this for quite some time. Because there hasn't been any pain or mobility issues associated with the trembling, we've put it down to muscle weakness on that side.

Hope you find some answers, Kami. We're thinking of you too and sending bundles of healing wishes your way.

Shaking could be anything from muscle weakness to spinal mets.  If mets are present you would see fairly rapid deterioration/ loss of limb function and often pain.  Spinal mets are rare.  It is much more common to see shaking due to overuse or muscle atrophy.  Your vet could xray the leg and spine but often mets can only be found with an MRI (see PEZ).

Oh Kami, I'm so sorry you are having problems with Mackenzie!  I don't have any experience with this and can only say that you will be in our thoughts and anxious for updates.

Prayers for you and Mackenzie!

Thanks for all of your very kind words and prayers....it means so much to me.  I got home tonight and Mackenzie greeted me at the door very excited and was even jumping a little bit.  She had to have her treats and wrestled with Kobe for a few minutes.  Now she's chewing on a bone after stealing it from Kobe.  We were looking at her leg and it looks a little indented - definitely not the same as her other leg.

Pam, thanks for your feedback.  I've heard that spinal mets come on quickly - would I know by now if it was spinal mets? I haven't given her a tramadol all day and she seems to have more energy as a result (still gave her the gabapentin). I have an appointment with her oncologist on Wed and figured that I would start there first.  I guess I wouldn't be so worried about this if it weren't for the fact that her mobility has deteriorated the way it has in just the last week. Her leg shaked a lot before but not affecting her mobility so never really was concerned.

Again, thanks so much everyone! It's so awesome to know that you are here for us!

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

Kami, thanks for the update. Try your best not to worry (uh huh, easier said...I know), Wednesday will be here before you know it. That's a great place to start looking at what might be going on.

Ugh, if only humans spoke Doglish.

Know that you have the Power of the Tripawd Nation sending lots of love and well wishes your way. Keep us posted OK?

Thank you all again so much!!  I will definitely keep you posted.  I had a little bit of a scare earlier.  I hadn't been home from work yet and my pet sitter called me to tell me that Mackenzie wasn't moving at all and didn't want to get up.  She was very worried.   I was just beside myself as I was driving home from work.  Couldn't get home soon enough.  But when I did, guess what - Mackenzie greeted me at the door, wagging her tail, hopping over to get treats and then again stole Kobe's bone and is now chewing on it.   So that brought a lot of relief but we can definitely tell that something's not right.  So hopefully tomorrow I'll have some answers on what's going on.  This is so difficult...

Kami;

Just popped in to Tripawds to catch up on some "old" friends ... and read your post about beautiful Mackenzie. Please know that you and Mackenzie are in my prayers. You and I had the luxury of being able to spend dedicated time with our beautiful golden girls - and the biggest anxiety is not being able to be with her all the time - particularly if things are changing with her mobility. I will be anxious - as is everyone - to hear what the oncologist has to say tomorrow (today, I guess). Give her extra hugs and kisses. She knows how much you love her. And I hope you know how fond we are of you and the Ocean girl.

Thinking of you,

Tana (and Spirit Sophie)

"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."

Kami - we're keeping you and Mackenzie in our hearts today and are hoping for the best.  Keeping all fingers and paws crossed here in IL that her visit with the oncologist goes well.
