Hey all, former tripawd mama over here.. coming with a new question about a new adopted kitty we got. Because OF COURSE after our extensive history with Alfredo we would literally end up in a vet's office 24 hours after we adopt a new kiddo.

We thought it was an upper respiratory infection. Turns out it was, but it progressed to pneumonia. At this point it seems like only one lung is affected. He was seemingly fine when we adopted him yesterday, so this came on quickly. We declined 48-hour hospitalization because... we can't afford that. The estimate was over $4000. So, cutting to the chase, we opted to bring him home with antibiotics to attempt to "fix" him. The doctor didn't think it was impossible. My questions to you all is... do you think we can do this? I have the benefit of working from home, so I can be diligent with this care. Any tips and suggestions welcomed!!

Well goodness graxious  Alfredo!   What in the world are you doing sending your Mom a sick kitty??   Oh, let me guess.  You saw this little kitty was in need of @ove and care and compassion and you knew your Mom was the one who coukd provide  all that.....just like she did for youheart

I hope the Resxue group will help with some of the expeenses.  Even though the "at-home" care isn't $4,000 the meds still cost.  It's really hard ro believe this illness didn't get a head start at the rescue...just sayn'

Sorry I don't have any input.  Dr Pam will chime in, as well as perhaps Holly and Kerren (Purrkins and Mona).

No matter how things turn out, you are giving this kitty a chance AND he is being loved.   Thanks for doing that.

Hugs

Good for your for adopting a kitten!!! And, yes, Alfredo knew exactly whom to send you!!! Would definitely follow Sally's suggestion and ask rescue group if they could either help financially OR if there is a vet they use who offers discounts. Also, they need to know so that they can watch the other kittens for signs or isolate as needed so that it does not spread throughout the facility.

How old is kitten and what meds/protocol did they give you? Did they treat with any shots? As you know, depending on the age and any underlying conditions, pneumonia can be quite serious ( but treatable!!!) in cats. However, if anyone can help kitten recover, it is you:):):) ( Lastly, if you see any mouth breathing, kitten will need to go in vets as cats hate to mouth breathe).

(Also, kitten needs to be kept warm and maybe have extra smelly food to encourage kitten to eat- if kitten cannot smell. And, if for any reason kitten has the corona/herpes virus which is VERY common in more crowded facilities, you can give kitten L-lysine which is a god send under these conditions. You can grind it up and mix in foods as it is completely tasteless. And the corona/herpes virus does present as a nasty URI in kittens. If you suspect it is this, you will want to look at further care and treatment for the future.)

Best wishes, good for you for loving a rescue and hanging in there and opening your hearts to kitten!!! We really, really hope all goes well and kitten turns the corner soon:):):) Best wishes to all from Da Bear HQ!

Whoops: forgot to add calcivirus: very common in shelters and can lead to pneumonia. Not as much of a worry as the corona virus long term.

Alfredo sent you a kitty!! I am sorry to hear kitty has pneumonia! I understand the high cost! Charliebear gave a lot of great suggestions & questions as usual!

I have the same question how old is the new kitty & what did they send you home with? Are you able to give the kitty the medicine ? Any problem getting the meds in kitty?

Was kitty dehydrated ? Did they discuss maybe hydrating him at home? Is kitty eating ?I do not have any experience but I will provide a link for you with great info Pneumonia (Bacterial) in Cats

I added screen shots for you from a different site so you do not have to go to another link! I am sure you can treat kitty at home I just do not know the condition the kitty is in. I do hope kitty makes a full recovery !

I would probably give a Convenia injection and then doxycycline orally.  Make sure to humidify the environment and offer smelly canned food since kittens often won't eat if they are stuffed up. Did the shelter do a combo test for FIV/FELV?
