Jasper seems to have a cold sore or perhaps she nicked her jaw on a bone?

You all know Jasper is the most aggressive chewer I have ever met. She ALWAYS has to have something in her mouth, toys, bones, her legs, grass, weeds .... I really would like her to STOP grabbing weeds/grass/plants on our walks since I don't know what they are or what they might have be sprayed with but it's a hard thing to do.

BUT last night I noticed this on her mouth. The first photo is one side of her mouth and it looks, I don't know, cut up? Or like a cold sore? I rubbed on it and it doesn't seem to bug her but it looks like it might have some crusty blood. The other photo is the other side of her mouth that looks normal.

Now the good news is, she didn't react or flinch when I did this so I don't think it is pain. I think perhaps she might have cut herself on one of her bones... or the rope she chews on? Rug burn? One of her bones does have sharper edges so maybe that? I've never seen anything like this and like I said, it doesn't bug her ... and when I left for work, she was in her 'fort of the day' chewing away....

Any thoughts? Can dogs cut their mouths like this on bones? Of course... after what I went through with Shelby ... I am ultra paranoid with EVERYTHING!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. Yeah... it looks like an abrasion or a cut... definitely NOT a bump or lump! I am sure she just cut herself w/her bone. If it doesn't heal, I guess I 'll run her to the vet next week.

Oh Sally... you're hilarious! It's not black polish ... it's a dark grey and apparently that is 'trendy' in LA right now. No cult thing here and boy oh boy do I need a fresh mani! Eek! blush

Oops! I read that one wrong...thought you said you needed a "fresh man".

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Oh I can't quit giggling about the "fresh man" statement....laughinglaughinglaughinglaughinglaughinglaughing

I can only view the first pic of Jasper but it just looks like a scratch/abrasion that Sally mentioned.  Have you thought about maybe heating up some salt water and taking a syringe to squirt some water on it to try and keep it cleaned out?  Not really able to put any ointment on it but I remember when I had my wisdom teeth taken out I was supposed to gargle with warm salt water to help keep the sutures cleaned out so an infection wouldn't start.  Just a thought.

LOL ... y'all crack me up!!! That is true .. I do need a "Fresh Man" but right now I am happy as a single parent to my little Jasper Lily!

Sahana... that's a good idea. I can flush it out w/some warm salt water to keep it clean (her mouth is always one something).

I did post on my FB page today that Jasper seems to like to "nip" at weeds, grass, landscaping on our walks and it stresses me out ... I don't why she is eating green leafy things all the time but someone thought perhaps her fiber intake was low and she was trying to give herself more fiber? Makes sense. She is on a pretty high protein diet and while she gets a couple baby carrots and cucumber slices (and pure pumpkin) ... it might not be enough. I was worried about over-fibering her. Sigh... being a mom is HARD!!!

My golden girl Pepa also has those sores in her mouth, and she is also always carrying or chewing something.

My impression is that she "bites" her lip, like we humans do.  It happens to be exactly where the canine teeth rest on the mouth when closed.  I'm also a little paranoid, was thinking that I should have it checked by the vet when I take her for her vaccines next month.

Daniela

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.

Hahaha! I thought I read fresh man at first too. Too funny. Maybe one of the weeds had a jagger in it? As I am writing this, Lucy is chewing away at her antler. She holds it in the sure of her mouth right about where Jasper's looks a bit sore. Hugs, Lori, Ty and the canine trio

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

It looks like just a bit of irritation from either the bone or maybe some allergies. It's not uncommon for some dogs to get a little irritation or even pyoderma along their lips.

Sorry for the delay.....

That is lip fold pyoderma which is any infection near the crease of the lip.  Some dogs (such as Cockers) get this a lot but it could be a one-time thing due to an abrasion or irritation.  Keep it clean and dry and it should resolve.  There is an ointment called mupiricin that works well for chronic issues and some dogs do well with NeoPredef powder since it dries out the fold.

Thank you, Pam, so much!!!! Jasper is prone to allergies of the skin (she gets the itchies a lot) so this makes sense. I've been watching it for a week and it doesn't seem to bother her but it hasn't cleared up either.

I did take away one of her bones that has sharp edges but since she LOVES to chew ... I can't keep everything out of her mouth. I wonder if that is why she nips at the grass... maybe it soothes it? I guess I'll make her a vet appointment.

We went to the vet yesterday and you are 100% correct. Sadly this is probably something Jasper will deal w/her whole life but we got some antibiotic cream that should clear this up. The good thing is that it doesn't seem to bug her or is infected. This little rescue sure has some 'issues'....

Thank you!
