Dakota is 9, 75 lbs., and is 4-months post-amp. He has taken Deramaxx since the first of the year to deal with shoulder stiffness and some knee pain (though knees x-ray completely clean of scar tissue). We only began the Deramaxx in preparation for the surgery, since he would have to contend with shoulder stiffness with only one front leg. His cancer was soft tissue, if it matters. He is also taking tetracycline and niacinimide for presumed DLE.
I'd like to do a trial of SAM-e to see if I can replace the Deramaxx completely. I need advice on how to to do it. Do I start the SAM-e the last week or few days he is on Deramaxx to get some overlap? I think I'm to give him 2 tablet a day, 400 mg. each time. I remember that being the dose. But the actual replacement process I'm unsure of. And how to give it on an empty stomach when he generally gets pills buried in a small amount of bread or cheese? Is a tablespoon of food to bury the pill ok, or should I just open the mouth and shove it down?
Thanks for any assistance. I appreciate it.
Shari

I would start the SAM-E now since it can take a few weeks to see improvement. I used to give it first thing in the morning and then feed my dog 1 hour later. It is okay to use a small amount of food (like a Pill Pocket or peanut butter) to get them to take it. There is a veterinary brand (Zentonil) that is chewable but will cost you more than the human stuff.
I would ask your vet about weaning off of the Dermaxx. It is safe to stop it cold-turkey but you might want to use it every other day for a week or so to see if there is any pain. Also, some sarcomas do benefit from the anti-angiogenic effects of NSAIDS so that might be a reason to keep using it.

Thank you, Pam. I'll go ahead and start giving Dakota the SAM-e. I'll talk to my vet about the Deramaxx. I appreciate your time!
