I know Jasper isn't a tripawd but I was curious if hiccups in dogs is something to be concerned about. She's gotten them about 4- 5 times since I've had her. It's funny to watch but I know how awful they are (for me) and wonder if I should get her to the vet? Obviously - after what I just went through with Shelby, I am hyper-sensitive to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that doesn't seem 'normal'....

And I would like to add, it doesn't happen after she's eaten anything. Usually when she's running around playing in the house. All of a sudden... hiccups and they don't last long. I don't want to 'scare' them out of her cause when she's spooked, she tinkles!

thx!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Alison,
Oops.....I am certainly not a vet, but for the most part, I don't believe hiccups are anything to worry about. My Labs, all of them have suffered many bouts of them when they were younger. I used to call them growing pain hiccups. I think when they are really active, gulp their food and water, run around like goofy kooks, it just happens. If they were to ever get them bad enough where they couldn't catch their breath, that would be something more concerning but still not life threatening. My girls have been so loud with them at times, I had to laugh.....my Pearl had them earlier today, ironically enough......her and another pet sit of mine were playing hard in the back yard, tag, your it kind of thing, they lasted for about 15 minutes.

Hope this helps out, I am one of those that think hiccups are cute and funny......!! laughing

Much Love,
Bonnie & Angel Polly

P.S. My daughter just handed me another diamond color rhinestone she found on the floor next to my chair in our living room while I was typing this.......

Thanks Bonnie! You know how it goes ... now I am ultra paranoid about EVERYTHING (never mind that I've had dogs my whole life). I think it's a little bit of PTSD going on.

Yeah, I think they are funny too. LOL ... She doesn't seem fazed by them and they don't last that long. Usually happens, like you said, after she's been rough-housing with herself or playing hard. Silly Jasper ... silly, silly!

It was funny the first time it happened, I'd never seen anything like it before. She was sitting next to me on the couch and I felt her move, kind of jolt and then I realized what it was... she just rode the wave.

XOXO Hugs and love!

Yeah, I'm curious too. Merry Myrtle, who is now almost seven months did th a t a lot when I first got her...not nearly as much now. And for her, there seem to be NO correlation between whether she had just eaten, had been playing, drinking, etc. In fact, many times she would have them while.she was resting and sleeping.

Alison...did you see where Bonnie found a "sparkle" while tying to yoy...hmmmm.....hello Shelby!

You can always ask questions about her Allison! I'm not sure about hiccups though, never been through them with our pack, but I'll put it out there and see if anyone knows about 'em. Next time it happens grab your phone and record so we could hear what it sounds like. Also might want to record on paper how long it happens, when, severity, etc.

Hiccups are a result of swallowing air so you are right they are usually no big deal!

I always thought hiccups in dogs were just a puppy thing. I've always heard people say that the only thing cuter than puppy hiccups are fetal hiccups. I dunno...I've seen A LOT of puppy hiccups and I think they're pretty gosh darn cute!! Anyways, a year or so ago, Yorrick got a case of hiccups and I couldn't stop laughing at him. I get horrible hiccups that are REALLY painful. One of my fiance's friends is convinced that humans can control their diaphragm well enough to stop hiccups, so when I get them around him he gets really mad and all out yells at me to stop my hiccups. So when Yorrick got his hiccups I was picturing this horrible friend yelling at Yorrick to control his diaphragm and to stop hiccupping!!

Yorrick had them again the other day in his sleep. I laughed...again. "STOP HICCUPPING!!!" Nah, I don't care. I think it's cute!

Right rear leg amp due to injury from unknown cause (but don't tell her she's missing her spare...yes HER!)

Now that I know they aren't serious, they are even more funny! Well Jasper's age is unknown so perhaps she's still a puppy. 🙂

She doesn't really make a sound, like humans, but rather sits next to me and her diaphragm goes up and down and she kind of shakes... doesn't seem to bug her but I hate them so I would assume she does as well!

Yeah Alison, that's more in line what Myrtle does do....the diaphram/tummy is making the "spasm motion" of big hiccups.... but not the.high pitch sound of hiccups!
Geeez...how t o describe.the.sound......."umph" maybe?

Obie gets them periodically. He gulps his food and also has this air licking thing he does when he is agitated so he swallows lots of air. He usually sits and his whole body sort of jumps, and he makes sort of a belch sound. It would be funnier if it didn't usually happen at night because he usually leans on me and wakes me up!
