Schlomo today is almost 4 weeks post op. We've had ups and downs like all of us have.

Schlo has 'only' been on Gabapentin for the last two weeks since he developed residual nerve pain. He is 45 pounds. On July 3rd they started him on 100mg/twice a day, then we went up to 100mg/thrice a day and then last Thursday we went up to 200mg/thrice a day. He has also been on Amantadine 100mg/once a day since July 7th.

I have noticed him being really wobbly since Gaba was upped to 200x3 and then since yesterday it seems he is barely hearing anything at all. He didn't hear me coming home, which he never misses, he didn't hear me calling his name multiple times in the same room and when I went up to him to pet him he looked completely startled. I saw the same thing today when I called him over and over being right next to him when he wasn't sleeping and he didn't react. He was not hard of hearing before.

I did research on whether or not Gaba could have this side effect and while the Vet says no, I found a few started topics online with people describing the exact same thing about their pets on Gaba. It is also recorded as a side effect in humans on Gabapentin.

I am wondering if this is temporary or permanent. If anybody has had any experience with this?

I am tempted to take him off Gaba and see if it makes a difference.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have not ever had anyone complain of this but it is listed in the human literature.  Please let us know if it is reversible.

I am sorry if I missed Schlomo's story thus far. First question I would ask is how old is Schlomo? Sometimes hearing loss comes on quite suddenly in older dogs and may not have anything to do with medications. IF it is the Gabapentin, what would you do to replace this medication so that Schlomo has the same treatment for pain? Also, do you think it is related to the dosage increase? All of the meds you have mentioned have large safety margins; however, there are always cases where unusual and unanticipated side effects occur. (This coming from someone who has a dog on amantadine, gaba, tramadol, and previcox, who has another dog who is 15 and has become hard of hearing, and who has had others that experienced unusual side effects). I guess the question is, what would you replace the gaba with if it is causing this side effect? Best wishes to Schlomo which is one of THE best names ever!!!
