Not a Tripawd question but a Monkey butt issue!! Yesterday I noticed that Sarge has broken one of his front teeth, it is broken off at the gum line and some of the tooth is still in the gum, I will get him to the vet hopefully this week but was just wondering if the tooth fragments left will work their own way out or will they need to be removed. At this stage it still looks healthy and non painful.

Thanks Sarah

Hi Sarah.  Luckily we've never had any experience with broken teeth.  Just wanted to send positive thoughts to Sarge that the treatment is quick and painless!  Sending good thoughts his way!

I feel bad now. Magnum broke off a front tooth years ago and it never occurred to me that there might be fragments left behind. But the gum looked healthy and she never showed any signs of infection or pain.  You are doing the right thing getting it checked by the vet.

We also had an older dog years ago that broke a tooth, and I didn't think to wonder about fragments. Of course, by the time I'd noticed she broke it, there was no telling when it had happened, so who knows what had happened to the broken off bit.

I just remember the vet saying he could recommend a doggy orthodontist. Yeah, right... At any rate, it didn't seem to cause her any pain or trouble, so hopefully that will be the case with Sarge as well.

That reminds me! I bought MBBunny Rita an antler to chew on today and I forgot to give it to her. Supposed to be great for cleaning tartar off their teeth. It better be, cuz it was pricey!

Gotta go get Rita her antler. Hope she doesn't bury it...
Hope Sarge's tooth feels ok and that the Tooth Fairy leaves him a cookie. (Do you have the Tooth Fairy in New Zealand, or is that an American thing??)

I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. opps sorry Karen didn't mean to make you feel bad 🙂 It obviously caused no problems for Magnum.

Thanks Jackie - An antler as in deer antler?? Had to laugh about the dog orthodontist I remember when Sarge kept injuring one of his eyes they reccomended he see an eye specialist !!

The tooth he broke is next to his lower canine so its a largish one but hopefully whats left will work its way out itself he is getting to old for traumatic surgurys etc.

And yep we have the tooth fairy here 🙂

It sounds like it is the third incisor.  Is it bleeding?  Sometimes you can see that the tooth is shattered and some dogs chronically wear them down.  Either way if the pulp is exposed then the nerve root could become painful or the tooth could become infected and abscess.  I would have it looked at possibly extracted.  There are many safe anesthetic combinations for older pets.

Thanks Pam - no its not bleeding but just snapped clean off at the gum. I figured that it could possiably become infected and that the remaining pieces will need to be removed. Looks like the tooth was pretty much stuffed before it broke as the pieces left in the gum are brownish. Will go to the vet hopefully this week.

Thanks

yep - as in a deer antler. I was reading the other day how raw beef bones are great for cleaning tartar off their teeth, but if you don't wnat the mess of beef bones you can give them an antler instead. I'd noticed antlers at the little pet store near our neighborhood the other day and didn't really know what the appeal was.

Anyway, I gave it to Rita and she loves it! Looks like it should last a long time as well. She's a happy pup.

Hope Sarge is not in pain - and that the Tooth Fairy brings him a nice *soft* cookie. 😉

Hi Sarah,

We had this problem very recently and I posted about it in our blog. Dakota broke an upper canine in a tussle with MB Evelyn over...who remembers? Probably food or a bone. It was broken right inside the gum line so I wasn't even sure there was anything in there. I took him to the dentist the next day and he verified that the tooth was still up in his head. Canines are tremendously long. We had it removed because I couldn't imagine the pain of the exposed nerve and I didn't need the infection risk.

If you want, you can go to Dakota's blog and read about his adventure. It was called "I got high with a little help from my friends."

As a postscript, Dakota managed to remove all 6 stitches within days so he had to go back and be anesthetized again and sewn up with stronger stuff. This time it was 10 stitches and they take about 3 months to dissolve. I could have taken him back to have them removed but I decided he'd had enough dope. They don't seem to bother him and I'm letting them go on their own.

Shari

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

Dakota's thoughtful and erudite blog is at http://shari.tr.....pawds.com/

Duudes, be careful with the antler things. I cracked one of my pearly whites on one. They are SO hard! And I'm not sure they really did all that good a job cleaning crud off my choppers. Now my mom gives me bison bones, which aren't as hard and are only messy for a day (they don't come with a lot of meat on them), and then they're all cleaned up but I can still gnaw on them for days and days.

Oh, that's good to know. The antler I got for her is split in half, so she's mostly been worknig on the insides and hasn't gnawed the outside down too much yet.

Now I need to figure out where to get bison bones....

YAY! Grandpa Sarge!!!!!

This is the greatest news since sliced Milk Bones!!!!  Like I've always said......MISSING TEETH ARE SUPER COOL!

Funny story.......(not to mommy, so don't say anything to her) but the monkeydogs will appreciate it.....I broke mommy's front tooth out back in 2010. I was almost back up on the auction block since I had only been here a year!!!!!  I thought she looked and sounded great!!!!  But then she cried because it was during Labor Day Weekend and had to go without a tooth for 3 days.  She had to spend like 4 figures to get it fixed which made her a little unhappy too.

I still think it looked fabu........SHUSH!!!!!!!!.....here she comes........no one say anything...... GOTTA GO!!

Oooh, good luck! Sounds like someone needs to get some special treats after the anesthesia wears off!
