Roxy is a 3 year old German Shepherd. She had a front leg  and scapula amputated Sept 7, 2010. Her fur is not growing  back. Any supplements or topicals that may help?

All dogs are different and some fur regrowth for some breeds is slower than others. We're not vets, so hopefully Dr. Pam can provide better professional advice. In the mean time these posts & topics may be helpful ...

My dog Chloe just celebrated her 6 month ampuversary.  Her fur STILL HASN'T completely grown back yet and she is what I would consider a short haired breed!!!! All of her undercoat has grown in, but her guard hairs are still missing. Right now it looks like she has a tan line (since she is a golden/brown color).

I haven't taken a picture of her rump lately, but I took this video about a week ago. You can see a light spot where her leg used to be because her fur hasn't grown back completely.

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog

My dog still had not regrown her hair 6 months post-amp until I started her on the Power Mushrooms and then it all grew back in 2 weeks.  Fish oil and melatonin can also stimulate hair regrowth.  Did your dog have chemo?  That often contributes to slow hair growth.

It took about 8 months for all of Dakota's hair to grow back and then it was a lighter shade of brown!  His doc said for us to "aggravate" the hair follicles at least once a day by brushing over the bald area (being careful over the actual incision) and that eventually the follicles would wake up again.  They did.  If you live in a sunny environment, be sure to spray some sunscreen on the bald spot if your baby is going to be outside for long.

Thanks for info. I had just started to try to stimulate the folicals, and I will look into the power mushrooms. She also has fur growth only over the incision site.  Roxy has not had chemo. She had a freak accident. She took her normal flying leap to get her ball, and when she landed she had broken her humerus. We had the best vet in the area try to set it. After a couple hours in, he recommended removal.

Dante lost his left front leg due to things other than Cancer as well.

He'll be celebrating his one year ampuversary in 19 days - and he hasn't regrown a single hair! The vet said it would all come back - it hasn't. We were never really concerned about it anyways, but it does  make his amputation and the surgical site much more noticable!

You can see in this picture - it actually makes it look like he has more hair than he does, too. In normal light and in person, it's much balder than that.

Hi Roxy's mom-

I am NOT a vet, but from my experience, it took Cali a full year to have her fur back to 'normal' after her amputation.  I remember worrying about it a lot, but what I think is the issue is that she has a double-coat (downy under coat, glossy outer fur) and it takes 2 full shed cycles to grow both coats back.  I don't know if GSDs are double-coated like huskies are, but that may be it.  It took the same time with her subsequent surgeries (for non-related issues).  The under-coat grew back first, but it took a while and even longer for the outer coat.

Hi Roxy's Mom,

I was looking at old pics of Mag today and ran across one of her about 6 months after her amp.  You can clearly see a line where the fur had not grown all the way in.  It did eventually- Mag made almost 4 years after her amp.

I am wondering about what Cali's mom said about double coats.  My pug girls both had double coats- not all pugs do.  Not quite like a sled dog, but still they have an undercoat and longer outer coat.
