Okay, I know we had a post about some of our overly friendly boys flying their red flags too often – but what should we be looking for to indicate it's more than just a symptom of lacking any sort of modesty?
We think Dante might be having an issue with his, he seems to be having trouble getting it back in once it's out, and he's bothering with it a lot lately, and the other dogs seem to be quite a bit more interested in it than usual. But being that my other male dogs in the past were very rarely as 'friendly' as Dante seems to be, I don't know what to be looking for!
It is possible for dogs to get an infection of the prepuce (sheath) which can lead to redness, irritation, and increased discharge. This should respond to flushing and antibiotics.
Some dogs get so excited that they have increased blood flow to the penis which causes various degrees of erection and a few dogs will get their penis stuck out. This requires lubrication and may take up to 30 minutes to go away!
Pam
Sheath infection, thank you!
He had one in the past that required he be flushed and have antibiotics - but it didn't seem to bother him other than having copious amounts of green discharge.
Our vet did say though that sheath infections tend to be common in young dogs and that it would likely come and go on it's own before age 2 and not to pay too much attention to it unless the discharge got really bad again. Which seems to be the case with Dante, he's had a few bouts of green discharge that have resolved themselves - but it must be bothering him this time around. Our vet gave no indication that we'd ever see anything more than discharge, so I didn't really think to connect the two - but that's probably what it is. Poor buddy, the flushing part of the ordeal does not look pleasant!
On that note, since he has had issues with sheath infections - is there anything we can do to prevent them once we've treated it?
Ouch! We hope Dante gets things under control soon.
Thanks for answering Pam!

Are we talking penis' again?
GRODY!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
I never had an infection in mine, but I have certainly not grown out of it! In fact, I have G R O W N into it! Hahahahha! Oh crap, I wet myself.
Love, Dakota
From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

No need to be embarrassed, Dante certainly isn't! Just be glad I didn't include pictures!
Sorry for the TMI everyone! But, I just HAD to ask. I didn't want to be the dummy taking him to the vet because he's over excited, if there was nothing wrong! Plus, with as many happy flag flyers as we seem to have from that one old goofy post, I thought it might be helpful for others.
Thanks Pam. We'll try to help him out a bit in the cleaning department and see if that helps keep it away. He's 1.5 now, so hopefully in another 6 months or so, he'll grow out of it. The infection part, anyways!
FYI: Just came across this rather comprehensive article about Identifying and Caring for Canine Penis Problems while checking out the Tripawds Twitter feed. Hope it helps!
